I'm no D2 expert but I believe some '03's have a CDL equipped TC, just no linkage to enable it. Some people rig up a pull cable or turn the nipple with a wrench to lock it. Other '03's, I believe, don't have a CDL TC at all.
Anyone care to ellaborate on this?

No, none of the 2002 and 2003 in North America came with the CDL guts. Some late 2001 didn't either. But I'm probably going to steal the one out of my 99 before I sell it.

New topic.

is it better to air down... a D1 or D2 (with cdl internals but no linkage)?

:applause: thanks for the amusing derailment this morning gents.

Yet another and more specific vote for a D1 but a '94 / '95 with the earlier Lucas EFI is my completely biased suggestion.

Can you elaborate on why this is your preference? I've owned both the 14CUX and GEMS engines at different times and, all else being equal, I think I prefer the GEMS, but never did much work on my Lucas so I don't know it as well.

Its not just the efi. O2 sensors are all I've really had to replace on my GEMS vehicles, but the rest of the truck just doesn't seem as well built as the 94 95.

The door pocket holders don't hold up, the dash peel is worse on my 96+ vehicles, the seats aren't as padded, the rectangular holes behind the trim pieces on the side of the doors, the audio amplifier is a m-fer to get at.

It's little things, really not much of an issue, a 96 to 99 is still a great vehicle.

What he said... saved me the trouble. But also the EFI and Security / disabling shit on the gems efi. What i like mainly about the lucas vs. gems efi is that you can troubleshoot with a simple multi-meter and keep moving; no computer needed and no "codes" to reset via external interface. And there are some easy ways to make a dist.cap water "resistant" (not water proof) but that's not the main problem with deep water. Unless you relocate the alarm module and the relays in the pass. kick panel who cares where your dizzy is? If those get wet you're ability to restart or keep it running is questionable at best anyway.

Anyway, like I said, I am completely biased toward the early models and simply like em, hence my suggestion of early vs. later D1. We could list the specific differences but that has been done about 500 times in various threads on every forum... ever. Can we talk about mods next... or "tyres"?

I own two 14CUX and two GEMS trucks. Can't say there is any significant difference in amount of maintenance or difficulty in troubleshooting. I'd take any of these on a 3000-mile cross-country trip.

Also, I can't comment on the difference in quality - both GEMS trucks are D1s, and both 14CUX are 95 RRCs, and RRC quality was by far better than D1 in nearly every respect but quality of sheetmetal stampings.

All this talk of RRC is driving me mad. Why did I sell mine, why? I miss that truck a lot.

My 95 D1 3.9 has a Ford/Holden distributor and an Australian Bosch HEI module with a performance coil to suit - it made a massive difference to timing including throttle response and outright power. No more going through caps and buttons and very cheap replacement if I ever need to. If you are doing water crossings just grab a latex glove.

Cheers

I realize this thread is a bit stale, but it's worth noting that I run 45psi off-pavement. PM isn't the only one to shy away from airing down, regardless of the reason.

Cheers,
