ok i know officially dI's are supposed to be able to tow 5k in hi and 7k in low, but i dont see how thats even possible. this past weekend i towed 5 canoes on a trailer and was loaded with five people. i figured the canoes at 200lbs each weighed 1k lbs, the trailer about 1k lbs, and the five of us 750 lbs. all together thats 3000 lbs including gear. i have a 5 speed so i was able to get better torque and speed. but even still i defiently felt all the weight when going up an incline and couldnt go above 50 up a grade. has anyone really towed 5000 lbs easily in their disco?

I know one Disco that towed an airstream across country, all up weight of the "rig" was 11,000lbs.
You were at 8k, so well within limits. Just know that you have to take it easier on them there inclines. Plenty of those around in upstate SC!

Actually the towing capacity is 5500 lbs. Yes I tow a travel trailer from the foothills of NC to Myrtle Beach 2 or 3 times yearly. Total combined weight of 10,500 weighed on a cat scale. And yes it is slow up some of the hills, but the hardest pulling is on the flat land. Rolling terrain is not so bad.

200 lb canoes?

5000 lbs. no, but I don't recall a problem pulling a canoe trailer with eight canoes, paddles, and other gear. We also had five people, 4 teenage scouts, me and camping gear. Had an occasional problem with wind gust pushing the trailer around, but it was an easy pull.
