I am curious what your feelings are about off roading/crawling about with a diesel powered truck vs a petrol powered one?
Advantages that i see is that while moving slowly, you would use very little fuel,
But you wil also be stinking out the person behind you,
The max torque is at 2k rpm,
so at 1k you can do alot,
But it is slow
Please let me know what you have seen
or what you know!
Thank you!!!
Peter.

not sure about stinking out the person behind you although there is some smoke depending on the load condition.

the power band is pretty tight yet keep in mind on a 300Tdi the turbo boost maxes at 2,100 rpm.

it is really a different feeling as the power is right off when you let out the clutch vs having to keep the rpms up to be in the power band.

off-highway a diesel is nice because you can have the power at a low speed which is usually what you're going in a tough spot anyhow.

the fuel economy is just awesome - on our latest all day excursion covering about 150 miles over a 8 hour period with idling, highway, and slow trail driving we used less than a 1/4 of a tank.

only time I miss driving with the 4.6 gas engine is on the highways. we can cruise pretty well at 120kmh at 3,000 rpm with the 300Tdi until you hit a pretty good hill. you end up dropping down to about 2,200 or around max turbo boost and this is about 100kmh. with the 4.6, you would have just kept going.

Run it on bio-diesel and it won't stink, and won't emit any ozone depleting gases either.

Ok... it will smell like french fries, but that is better than petrol based diesel fumes.

I have been out a couple times in Tom B's 2.5 diesel powered Series I and it was not too smokey behind him also the truck CRAWLS. It will idle up the steepest grades and will almost stop in 1 low on downslopes.

Peter, you thinking about the peugout diesel?

Ron, was thinking about peugeot power... as small as that might be,
But one day last month i was on the way back from the dog park and ran into a 1984 MB 300GD, running like the day it was made, and looking like it too,
too many new parts,,,
So i bought it
it has a 5 cyl, MB diesel, 4 sp manual, fr+rr lockers from factory, and it seems as though i am getting a tad over 25 mpg while doing suberbian driving,
I LOVE MY DISCO!!!! smoother ride, cushy, swifter, and so on
The MB is indeed a tractor for the german off road, NICE,
Glad to hear from you ron!!!!
Peter.

Even with my fueling and smoke screw turned up, I only smoke when down shifting from 4th to 3rd to go up hills at 60+, and it is very slight at that. Running Bio nearly eliminates that. On the trail at idle, the tdi emits so little, you would barely know it's on if not for the clakkity-clack.

The 2.8 hit's max torque at about 1400 RPM. The only difference I have seen on the trail is the slight turbo lag when trying to clear an obstacle from a stop. Meaning, sitting at idle, rev as much as possible and go. You can't rev as much as you do in a V8 prior to hitting the obstacle. The brakes just won't hold with that much torque being applied (DBA's and new calipers). So, you end up with a slower start than you are used to with the V8.

there is really no visable smoke while driving, unless i am looking in the rear view, at night while on the throttle, and there is someone tail gating, But there is the distinctive smell of an oil burner present is it is a still day! I am planning to go to Paragon this weekeng and give it a try, front sway bar removed, tank filled and ready for a day or two out testing this heavy bugger, 5.5k lbs

This G has a 5 cyl 3.0 non turbo diesel, No rust, new lifted springs, Billstien shocks,
Well, the PO bought it a year ago for 14k and put 10k into it, too much to list, It runs 99%, never drove new one,,,,, and everything works well, I paid about what he paid for it last year, A very generous man i must say,
I know it is alot for a 84, But i have always wanted one!
You can find a gas one for about 8-10k, but it may need some love!
Will be going to Paragon this weekend to see how it does
Leaving the locked/lifted D1 at home,,,,,,,,
Will have some pics soon,
will be with the D90 guys if they let me tag along!
Peter.
