As for the registration - You can not "register" a non-spec vehicle for off road use, that is the point; no registration, not registered for road use - in other words a tractor/farm vehicle etc. same way as if you wanted to build a tractor using a coal burning steam motor and have it run on metal spiked wheels, can it be registered and used "on road"? Nope. Can you build it and run it on your own land/trailer it to friends trails/fields? Yup. For now anyway till the hippies say it's too polluting.

Doug

Ok Doug,

I think I understand what you are saying. Correct me please if im wrong. A vehicle registered for "Off Road Use" would not be issued a license plate. Thus, making it not street legal.

I thought I remember reading that you with your DII Diesel registered it as "Off Road Use", right? Do you know anything about registering it as "commercial". If I remember correct... commercial vehicles are not required to be OBDII tested?

This "off road use" thing went away in Utah about 6-8 years ago. I brought that up in my conversation with the DEQ last Thursday.

The conversation basically ended with "well you'll have fun, let me know when you're done with your swap".

I did not have it registered as a diesel or for road use. It was sold as a modified "off road" vehicle.

You simply do not register it. Some States have issues producing a Title if it's been changed on the title from gas to diesel, just a heads up. I have been down these roads several times....

Ben - cool! That is NOT what they told me, maybe I had been talking to the wrong people? Doesn't really make sense then that they have issues with even importing the motors but I suppose it's ALL ABOUT the proper channels and who you talk to. :)

And to "coldwater": Commercial opens up a whole different can of worms and that OBD2 non testing is only over 8500GVW (or maybe it's 10K GVW?) I forget. Doesn't apply to Rovers anyway - at least none I know of!

Doug,

Thanks, this helps. I talked with my DMV early this year. They told me its very simple, just need to change one thing to the title after confirming it is now a diesel. In my state we do not have e-testing so... this is sounding ok. Thanks for clarifying so much Doug. So you just install the motor and stay safe and smart and fly under the radar.

Does any one know if some one has cracked the stock ecu in a d2. If they have its easy to set the ecu up into Force pass. We do it all the time in the Mitubish evo world. When DEQ reads the car we set the ecu up so that it will always pass.

That's what I'm talking about. It's like pulling light bulbs out of dashes and rewiring ABS lights to seat belt lights to give the effect that the ABS works correctly.

all this sounds like letting kids play in a fine china store. all well and good until something happens, like an accident.

It sounds like we're trying to find a semi legal way to have something that should not be illegal to start with. Its kinda like how marijuana is the #1 cash crop in the US and its still illegal in nearly every state. Im not promoting breaking the law... im just sayin, you all know what I mean.
