Diesel Discovery is good

Mark, if the engine is imported for non-highway use, then there is no issue. Different states and even counties will have different regulations on changing your title to state it's a diesel.

While oil companies state changing to low-sulfer is one reason why costs are rising and generally more than regular unleaded gasoline right now, I don't buy it. If profits weren't rising so much along with increase in oil costs, I might buy it.

I also like how they attempt to pass on the reason to the regulations. Forget the fact that they were wrong to put sulfer or lead in the diesel/gasoline in the first place. Ignore that fact. If it wasn't for the government, we wouldn't have to rise the prices on you as we retool. If it were up to us, the government would keep out of our business and let us keep pumping toxic fumes into the air and save you, Joe Consumer, $.20 at the pump.

They shouldn't have had the crap in there in the first place.

How about 'no-sulfer'? Just run it on biodiesel.

This is a little off the Rover diesel topic, but I was on a Finish website where some guys have Mercedes 300 diesel putting out over 400 HP. Very impressive.

I also saw a Massey Fergussen tractor in Holland where the owner stuck a GM 6.2 diesel in it. Modified it run up to 5500 RPM. He is using it as a pulling tractor. Not sure of the HP of that. The site said he used his own special lifters to get the high RPMs. Impressive me thinks.

Update:

Just went through first tank of diesel. Sill no official mileage numbers seems to be very good just from the amount of time it took to use up the first tank.

Engine:

running great, nice sound. reminds me of a siamese cat's purring.

Temps good. Exhaust Gas temperatures good (max up a hill is 600F, and that is right downstream from the turbo

Transmision:

running great, good shifts. solid power transfer. whistling sound.

I have been paying allot of attention to the tranmission - maybe too much since I am paranoid. Trans Temperatures at 120F upstream from a B&M oil cooler.
I do notice a "whistling" in the transmission that increases in pitch as engine speed increases. Since I wasn't really paying attention prior to the re-power, whether it was there or not, I do not know - I am original owner and truck currently has 60,000 on the drivetrain. The workshop manual states that "intermittant power with whining sound" is caused by either low fluid or restricted filter. I have full power, but this whining (It sounds more like a whistle to me) sound is definetely there. Fluid level is good. When I did the repower, I did change the tranmission fluid, but not the filter. I have read on discoweb and d-90 boards that the cleaning properties of new fluid loosen up some "old stuff" an can all of a sudden restrict the filter. I am going to change the filter this weekend (I just soaked those cross member bolts with Blaster) and see if it goes away.

Update of the Update:

Thanks Luis C! The "whistle" is coming from the engine- and probably the turbo as it is appears to be proportional to turbo boost readings. I revved up the engine a bit in park and the whistle was still there.

Michael,

Just wondering what kit you ordered and when you placed it. I just checked prices from their website and with todays exchange rate its well over 10K just for the engine....

timing matters. I got my kit back in November and I think it was around $9400 for engine and kit (£5,345) and yeah, right now that is $10,100+.

Yeah, the price is 5345, and the US Dollar has weakened quite a bit against the British Pound. If you are a serious buyer. call them up or email M&D and make them a good offer is the US Dollars that you can afford.

Any update on MPG yet?

Jeremy

Not yet, but will have in a week or two. I started officially tracking mileage a week ago with the last fill up with a GPS. Will post numbers as soon as I have them.

I am just completing the initial break-in period, and am beginning to add a little more throttle and I have to say this engine can move a discovery.

I guess I'll contact M&D and find out about the DII. BTW, the HDC does not activate the throttle, only the brake. Here's what I'm thinking:
99 or 2000 D II in great shape with high miles.........$8 to 10 K
diesel kit .............................................................$10 K
paying my buddy the LR mechanic to do the install...$2-3 K

SO, where else are you going to buy a great 4x4 diesel for $20 - 23K? :bigok:

2005 model Jeep Liberty Diesel, comes with factory warranty!:patriot:

If you add a couple or 5 thousand for rebuilding the transmission, replacing diffs with air lockers, heavy duty axles and steering components, and OME springs and shocks, and the only thing left of the truck will be the interior and body.

To answer the point that you could get a Jeep Liberty, well, then you'd have a diesel Jeep and really need that warranty:p. At least with a Disco, and the above additional mods, you'd pay the same money and have a heck of a capable vehicle, without much that can break.

Cheers
Victor

A jeep liberty is not a Land Rover Discovery. And it never will be. Now if you were talkin Rubicon with a diesel... I would think that was a cool rig.
