Diff lock stuck..96 disco

Hi everybody...I'm a new guy here:seeya: .

Just got an old 96 Disco and it runs well but it just has one thing that bugs me. It won't shove over into diff lock. I figure it could be just a nasty linkage since i had to realy cram it to go into low range. After that it got better about going from hi to low even though it is still a little stiff.

With out knowing for sure I thought I'd just ask before diging a hole through the floor board just to find out if a linkage realy is the problem.

Welcome BJ...........This is a common problem, discussed in great depth and length in these forums.

Try a search of threads before someone comes on and shoots you down.......:D

All of this is gonna do the trick. Thanks to everybody.

This actualy adds up to some good "family time". Being out in the shop w/ the wood stove going with both sons working on these things. Mean while the wife has dinner slow cooking in the house. This is about as good as it gets. :)

After action follow up report.

I believe sombody drove this car upside down into the Great LaBar Mud Pit. Perhaps it was a failed Evil Kenivel style stunt over some turtle infested pond.

The poor little shifter was compleatly encased in mud. I'm just glad they didn't try driving across big construction project involving Cement. We had to remove the entire section and used a screwdriver to chisel the mud out of the bottom part.

As for the shifter it did look quite hopeless. But after some loving care from alot of WD40 and a small hammer it works but is not exactly smooth..but it works!!!. I smothered that lil dude in greese and put it back on.

Now the only issue is that the Diff lock lite on the dash is on and won't go off. Not that that bothers me but it is nice to just look and see if it is engaged or not.

Hmmmmm, that may not be a good thing, if i recall, with the Disco, if the light stays on you are still in diff-lock.......not a good thing, especially on pavement.......

To confirm engagement/dissengagement...I think you have to jack up one front and one rear wheel and try to spin it...... If difflock is engaged the wheel will not spin......

I know that my own difflock light dosn't always extinquish right away, sometime i select rerverse and back up a bit, then forward, that seems to do the trick........that and selecting and deselecting the difflock lever a few times.......

Good Luck with it :D

Mine stays lit all the time as well. However, when I engage my diff lock it gets brighter. Diff lock off... it is considerably dimmer. I have no idea what's wrong to cause this, and gave up on worrying about things like that LONG AGO on the Rovers.

Also, have you driven the truck anywhere since this "fix"? Diff lock light should go off once you unlock and drive in the opposite direction. If not, welcome to Roverland

Not sure what to do now.

Jacked up both ends of the car on one side and spun either the front and the back and that made the other spin. Hence diff lock engaged even when lever far to the right.

Being mild mannered and of sound mind I then crawled under it w/ a spanner and beat the poop out of the linkage. Well then I could spin either tire and not bother the other! Then I started it while still up on jack stands and put it into gear - light still on of course - and both wheels come to life.

Later I drove it about the fields here at the house checking fences - what some of you guys would call a mild romp - still no hint of even wanting to kick out of diff lock.

For some dumb reason it seems like the linkage doesn't go over far enough to disengage.

Is there any adjustment need to be made other than bending the linkage? Or would we be better off just replacing the shift assembly and see what gives?

dont take a "nice long run" with difflock engaged. at least not on dry pavement.

I agree, But I do have about 250 acers here around the house w/ semi soft ground and a few hills and creek crossings to "heat" things up a bit. I figure the transfer case has a little re-breaking in to do. Then I'll do another oil change on it later next week.

Have you tried backing it up for a bit? You might just have transmission windup. You might also make certain (though I'm sure you have already) that you're really shoving the lever back over to the right- it might just not be releasing all the way.

If you can't get it to disengage while standing still, try moving at a steady 10 mph clip, drop it into neutral and, while still coasting, push it over to the right. For some inexplicable reason this sometimes enables difflock on my 98 D1 to disengage.

Hope I don't sound condescending- hard to know what background a lot of newbies have...

This may just work. I'll try coasting down this one slope here at the house and I bet it pops back to normal about the time I hit this new creek crossing I been using. :)
