DII Cooling Question

I might as well introduce myself to the community. Of course, it's by way of a cooling issue.

I have an 03 DII 4.6L and the auxiliary cooling fan usually clicks on as soon as the vehicle stops moving. My scantool live data stream shows the temp at 208 F and the dash gauge is right on the middle hash mark when this happens.

The vehicle has 40K on it and the system has operated this way ever since I bought it with 32K on the odometer. I've never seen the dash gauge go over the middle hash mark even during hard wheeling.

It happens no matter the altitude or temperature (Denver in winter, Moab off-road or the Texas beach in summer).

I've done a coolant flush and there is no appreciable coolant loss from the overflow after 8000 miles.

The engine oil is not milky nor can I see steam coming off the engine when it's cold outside and the engine is hot.

However, the viscous fan free wheels (can move it by hand; it's disengaged) if you cut the engine off when it's hot and running the auxiliary cooling fan. Maybe the fan clutch es kaput?

What do you think?

Additional info:

When the auxiliary fan clicks on, you can stop the main fan with a roll-up magazine. A shoprag will stay on the main radiator no matter the coolant temp. There is a sound like the main fan is engaged at startup, but it goes away as the vehicle throttles back to warm idle.

The bimetallic coil in front of the fan clutch is rusted.

I'm guessing the fan clutch operates properly, but the bimetallic coil is shot and not sensing a temperature change.

Anybody?

I.R. thermometer showed 191.5 F at the upper radiator hose as it exits the radiator.

I ordered a fan + fan clutch from Land Rover. It should be on the truck by Thursday.

Notes:

1. The new fan clutch came as a unit with the fan molded in.
2. There is a counterclockwise arrow on the front of the part. This is the direction I used to torque the old part loose.

At first I was stumped in that I had read here that DII's use reverse threads. At least on this vehicle, lefty-loosey applies in removing the fan/clutch unit. (36 mm for nut, NAPA pulley holder wrench for bolted -on pulleys)

The vehicle now reaches a temperature of 208 F with no cut on of the auxiliary cooling fan. The characteristic rushing sound of an engaged main fan increasing with engine speed is obvious. I haven't repeated the rolled-up magazine, shoprag or "hot shutoff" hand test yet.

This is my first LR product so I was unacquainted with the cooling system. The lack of fan-clutch engagement was very subtle and never lead to overheating in my hands. I was lucky.

I hope this thread helps some other DII/4.6L owner in the future. :patriot:

It has helped me...I broke a blade off my fan (no, the accessory plate/power steering pump will NOT fit between the fan and the long stud....in case anyone is wondering :ack: ) and in reading through the posts here I thought I could replace just the fan - couldn't find any of the 6mm allen bolts referenced in other treads, though, on mine.

And now I know why - it's one piece!

Strange that my dealer didn't know, though...nor did Motorcars, LTD who sold me a fan assembly...can't wait to get that so I can ship it back...ARGH!
