DII - Mismatched Keys

Sometime in its past, this DII (2004) either had it's ignition lock replace or the drivers door replaced --- either way, the ignition key doesn't open the door, and I don't have the door key. The remote fob does work...but having an actual key to unlock the door in case of issue is required.

Has anyone rekeyed a door lock on the DIIs?

I have a client (Rover shop) who just takes the cylinder out and pulls all the tumblers so any key will work. But a locksmith should be able to match them to your existing key pretty easily I think.

Does the thing turn at all when you put your key in and just not unlock the door? Because that means the rod between the handle and the actuator is broken and you need a new handle assembly.

many d2s have this. the ignition switches are stupid... dealers just replaced them and did not spring for the rekey.

a locksmith can rekey it easily. just get a vin cut blank (cheapy) from the dealer to match it up to the right cylinder, then have the other match.

All you should have to do is pull the door panel and remove the handle, and then take the handle and the key you want to have the handle keyed to the locksmith.

what i was saying is to ensure the key is the same as the key code from the vin. afaik he didnt know which was the real, and which was a replacement.

it SUCKS to try to get a key to work when you cant get a new one cut right and the truck is locked up or in superlock mode...

How is that relevant? The path of least resistance (easiest, cheapest) is to rekey the door cylinder to the current ignition lock. It doesn't much matter which key was original.

Exactly what I was getting at, thank you for stating it clearly

That's what I figured...now to find time to pull the door apart and remove the cylinder. Current plan is to just rekey the door to match the existing ignition key, and get two spares cut; one for the house and one to hide on the vehicle like I always do. I'm not overly worried about matching the VIN if I go that route (and confirm the keys work).

So your backup plan is to get a key cut by the dealer rather than leaving a spare at home?

I guess we just have different ideas about the easiest way to accomplish things.

I'm guessing it's not difficult, but any tips on removal of the door handle? I didn't really look at it the last time I was in the door, and RAVE doesn't seem to have any info on it...

In RAVE it's under Doors, Handle - exterior - front door

well that key at home wont help you if you are 600 miles away from home on a trip and you lose your key, ect ect ect...

and the ignition may be easier to pop out and rekey than the door as well..

crown, well if either doesnt match, then I would rematch both to the VIN code...

I have seen more than a few times the result of people being cheap, lazy, "easy" whatever and paying dearly....

we sold the ilco keys already cut for CHEAP.

I had my door lock fail on me. I live in the DC Metro area, was in Philly for business parked in the garage at the company condo. I went downstairs to the garage to put some luggage in the truck and the key worked fine. I came back 5 minutes later and couldn't unlock it.

I tried spraying dry lubricant into the lock, jiggling the key all sorts of ways, and tried to force it with no luck. I ended up taking a taxi to the nearest Rover dealer (Cherry Hill) with my vin number. They cut me a key based on the vin and another based on the key I had. Neither key worked.

I called AAA, they sent a truck out and I had to stop the guy from trying to pump the door open because I was afraid it would go into super lock. They sent out a lock smith and he couldn't cut a key to work.

About 6 hours later I figured there was no way I was going to have the truck towed out without breaking a window, disconnecting the battery to stop the alarm from going off and potentially having to break the steering wheel lock to get the truck out of the garage (the rover was too tall to be put on a flat bed and towed out).

I drilled out the lock and turned the tumblers with a flat head screw driver. My key that didn't work in the door still worked in the ignition.

I got a new door handle, had a good lock smith fit the key, and its been working ever since.
