Hello, What's the recommendation regarding power steering fluid for a 99 D2? Is the stealership the only place to purchase? Thanks in advance!!

I believe that for the D2, just regular power steering fluid is good. Valvoline Max Life is good and not too expensive. Do NOT use ATF, that is just for the D1.

On a side note, are you flushing/refilling or replacing because of a leak?

"Regular power steering fluid" as mentioned above..... is just ATF or also known as Dex-merc 3 - you can also use synthetic ATF.

Good idea if you're not sure what's in there or how old it is to do a good purge/flush and refill with fresh ATF.

Edit: Oh and PS, this thread may start a war as many people get pissy about oil/PS fluids etc..... just a heads up. LOL.

Thanks for the purchase recommendations! My fluid is low, so I must have a leak. Now the fun begins!!

the spec is LR ACE fluid, which is texaco cold climate, which is also GM cold climate as found in the corvettes. But an alternative is Pentosin CFH-11s. I have experienced increased pump failure where regular PAS fluid is used. I have no idea why ATF is not used... something about the seals being lubricated according to LR.... I have never seen the valvoline stuff in the store here...

ATF is one of the fluids specified that you can use by the company that overhauls the steering boxes here in the UK.

The D1 steering boxes are IDENTICAL to the D2 boxes, both made by Adwest engineering here in the UK.

ATF been in mine for nearly 2 years, no probs what so ever. As already stated this topic goes back an forth for ages lol.....

The ONLY fact I can find is the Workshop manual states you can use Dexron II or III in the ACE system, seeing as both systems normally use the same fluid, then its pretty straight forward in the fact that Dex II or III will also be fine in the PAS.........However, it DOES say do not use synthetic fluid.

If you cannot decide, go buy the LR fluid and be done with it, if you dont want to be held to ransom, then ATF will be fine.

Hmm - no synthetic - OK. Can't see why at all..... when was the manual written?

I do know that on many an Audi that use the Pentosin it seems to wreak havoc on seals and doing a flush and fill with "normal" synthetic ATF seems to help and have an almost zero failure rate. That said it could simply be the flushing and changing of fluid early on those systems that saved them? Who knows.

The moral of the story to ME on all these issues (trans, steering, diff oil - coolants etc) is change frequently and you'll be far better off. "Lifetime" coolant/oil/fluid is not realistic in MY opinion.

Cheers.

I used regular autoparts store PAS fluid after my HG job and the PAS pump failed 2000 miles later. It might be coincidence, but I'm now running the proper LR texaco cold climate stuff (even though I live in FL).

I use the LR specified fluid. !45K with no issues but I also have ACE and I'm not about to slam ATF in there.
If you are topping off and the fluid looks green I'd use what is specified. If it is already red use ATF
