DII Radiator Options

The D2s have a portion of the housing that is made out of plastic, and this plastic likes to crack. I replaced my radiator with another genuine radiator a little over a year ago, and this one cracked too.

Are there any reasonably priced aftermarket radiator options for the D2?

Hmm. They should only be cracking if they are not secured correctly...
Pretty sure all radiators for the DII have the black plastic tanks on both sides of the radiator. I heard of people buying a "silla" radiator.

Thanks Mongo.

Do you have one of these? If so, is it an OE duplicate with the fragile plastic pieces or is it an all metal/aluminum unit?

I'm considering having an aluminum radiator made if I can't find a more durable replacement than the OE unit.

I don't think that is necessarily true. I've heard from a number of LR techs that these radiators regularly fail at this location due to the way they mount and from what I've seen of the design that makes sense.

Yea, they don't mount in the best way. My radiator cracked at that same spot because I didn't adjust the mounts after the body lift. Just street driving too. Never had a problem with them cracking before though. My 2nd OEM radiator seems to be doing okay. But the best bet would probably be the silla or the custom radiator. Even with the new radiator I would make sure the mounts are in place and that the radiator is sitting in the bottom mounts the right way.

A little time with google and I found a couple of aluminum radiator shops that sell Discovery II radiators. The most promising so far is Alumarad as the price looks quite reasonable, and their "About Alumarad" page indicates that they don't use any plastic.

but Ron Davis Radiators lists Land Rover as a supported brand at the bottom of the page.

I have emails in to each of them for a few more details on their products.

Mongo, do you have SAI? My D2 has it. I've looked at replacement radiators, but it seems most don't list if the radiator is SAI compatible.

I boought a Silla off eBay about a year ago for $187 and have not had a problem yet.
Keeping my fingers crossed.;)
It is made in China and the cooling fins could have been algined better but for only a $187 I gave it a shot. My guess as these are seconds and the LR ones are made on the same line?

Mine had a plug in the SAI port so it could go either way.:smilelol:

Ron Davis doesn't have a template for a DII radiator, but will make one if I can provide him with an old radiator. He can provide an estimate if I have a drawing or photo of one. Anyone have a drawing or photo of a DII radiator?

That sounds like a load of rubbish. I see countless DII's with leaking radiators, but hardly any of them leak bad enough that they need replacing. Most that I have seen just seep out at the corners and you can see the coolant residue.
