DII rear suspension medium or heavy duty? & spacers question

Currently I am running a RTE 2" lift with the SLS spacers in the rear and OME shocks.

Are the bags limiting off road?

I can't help but feel like I would get more flex with springs in the rear. With that being said is anyone running medium duty springs in the rear of the DII? I have read that perform better off road, but my concern is that they will not give enough clearance for the rear bumper until I get a RTE rear. Should I just go with HD rears as well?

If anyone has any tips or suggestions they would be appreciated.

Also, how many guys are running spacers on DII's? Any problems? May have found a set of 1.5" for front and rear. Thought I may need them for the front once winch is installed. Pro's and cons?

Thanks

As per the experiences of others on this board, the airbags will eventually fail... maybe in five years... maybe tomorrow. Carry a spare airbag or a wood block. The biggest reason to switch to coils is peace of mind while wheeling. If you don't mind changing one on the trail, the SLS is nice because you can give yourself almost another two inches of ground clearance in the rear when aired up all the way. I just figured it wasn't worth the risk. That and the SLS's habit of self-leveling at every stop light was driving me crazy.

When I ditched my SLS, I went with the RTE HD. I don't know about flex, but it kept the rear nice and high even when loaded down with off road gear, luggage, and Christmas loot yesterday! I don't think anything looks sadder than a Disco sagging in the rear.

As for flex, I'll bet a rear locker would get you a lot further than trying to squeeze a bit more flex out of a D2 on a 2" lift.

Carry a spare bag with me now...

Thanks for the reply.

Regarding the spacers just wondered how much height I would loose if any with the winch installed.

I realize the unrelability from being around here...there are a lot of stories for sure.

I guess I was looking more for whether my articulation would be better with springs verses bags and whether MD or HD springs were better for the rear.

Thanks for the replies.

should also carry air fittings, air lines, compressor, solenoid, relays, fuses, switches, and anything you can think of that is related to that damn SLS.

I know the bags suck....just want to find the best route when I replace them....

Did you go HD or MD springs in the rear...I think I remember you removed your rear sway bar...

Just wondering...Thanks

Lookup the weight specs for your winch. My 9.5ti with the steel cable was around 90 lbs. Measure you current front height, then find someone at 180 lbs, sit them on your bumper, then measure again. Cut the difference in half. Or open your hood, lay some towels down, then use weights from a weight set. And, if you use a synthetic rope and hawse fairlead, you'll take off about 30 lbs. I can't imagine 70 lbs on your front bumper taking off much height at all... I'm telling you, if you put spacers on the front it's going to look silly tall vs the back, especially if you ditch the SLS for coils (my rear SLS always seemed to sit high compared to coil rigs).

Another trick for DII coil swapover is to install DI rear spring seats. That will even things out just a bit or actually put your rear a little higher. The appearance is more appealling and it gives you a little more travel if you haul a lot of crap around all the time like most of us do.

Cheers,

Mike
