Ok, so my 99 DII takes forever to start (sometimes up to about 30 tries). When the key is turned, the starter runs, but does not seem like it is getting enough juice to power up fully to the engagement point. I just hear it whine. I took it out, cleaned the connections and bench tested the starter, and it works perfectly. I have searched everywhere on discoweb and found nothing. Anybody seen this?:ack:

does your car shutdown while driving down the road? If so it might be the crankshaft sensor - I know it sounds strange but do a search .... very common problem.

You can pull the crankshaft position sensor and give it a one shot of cleaning it and reinstalling it. sometimes this works. Some electrical cleaner and a little emory cloth on the sensor.

I agree but this has happened to many folks stuck in parking lots, trails, etc... It is worth a shot as far as trouble shooting is concerned. FWIW I carry a spare CKPS in my glove box.

sounds like you need a new starter. i would have to hear it to know for sure. if it spins but does not turn over the engine, the bendix drive is bad.

I've tossed around the idea of it being the positioning sensor. As for dying on the road or while idling or anything, I've had none of that. The truck runs awesome once it starts and once it's been driven about 10 minutes it will start great the rest of the day. It's just every morning right when I am running late for work, that it decides it's not going to get up. I have also thought it might be the bendix, but am thinking with it starting great once I get it running, it might not be. But at this point who knows?

I tried changing the CKS last night man, I stop it since it's hard to reach the bolt. Anyone have an idea how to do it? I did a search and someone said it's easier than 15 minutes. The exhaust is blocking the access to the CSK. Thanks in advanced.

if the starter is spinning and the engine is not, the bendix is bad. just because it dosent do it after the truck has warmed up a bit dosent change it. its still bad. at some point it will fail all together and no starty. if the engine is turning over but not starting, that is different. MORE DETAIL PLEASE.:D its not rocket science. this is old technology.
