I'm looking at a 2002 DII (124k mile) is excellent condition but overheated with the subject symptoms. Of course, the owner, sailor, has a loan and hopes to get the payoff (that isn't going to happen at $5k). I'm suspecting it has a blown headgasket but haven't been able to see the truck in person. Any ideas what to look for specifically? I'm well adept in the DI's but not the bosch powered DII's.
DII starts clicking, blows small tube then overheats - any ideas?

just like a DI, exhaust in the coolant. I agree about price, $1000 if it is immaculate but a blown HG.
With that issue and an asking price of $5k, I would not have wasted my time looking at it. D2's are dirt cheap now, you can get a running/driving example on craigslist for under $2k without much trouble. I've found that the difference between a $2k and $5k truck on craigslist tends to be the seller's ability to mask the repairs needed.
