I just finished doing the sump gasket on my '03...for the second time in 6k miles. This time I read through the posts that seemed to indicate using Right Stuff instead of the factory gasket. Since I'd used the factory gasket last time I figured I'd give the Right Stuff method a try.

Anyone done this?

If so, I'd love to hear what you did about the 4 bolts going from the sump to bell housing...throw them in the trash?

Thanks guys,

Pat

Um, I put them back in...?

The Right Stuff route is the only way to go. You won't be sorry about that part.

Except that without the gasket there the holes are off by 1/8" or so...there's no way I can get the bolts back in...not without dropping the pan down some.

I guess the 1/8" would just be taken up by the sealer...but the pan will be tight to the engine in the front and down in the back...

Not sure, but you may have read about people with D1's using that product for the entire sump seal.

The DII gasket, has little spacers in it to maintain the proper distance between motor and sump. I would NOT use JUST sealant between motor and sump.

Is there a reason you are considering doing this? Is it leaking? I fit mine dry except for the small amount of sealant near the front cover and at the rear main bearing cap.

I think you're right...just looking through the stuff I read this afternoon and they're all DIs.

It had been leaking for a long time when I replaced the gasket last month. I used sealant where it said to in the book - by the seams on the front and rear. It leaked worse than ever then. I talked to one of the tech's at my dealer and he said they coat the entire rear portion, top and bottom of gasket, as well as the side bolts.

So I dropped it down today to do it and decided I'd do some research before putting it back up - that's when I saw the Right Stuff, stuff and decided not to use the gasket.

Tomorrow the gasket goes back in! Third time is a charm...

Thanks a lot.

The Right Stuff is EXTREEEEEME!

Did I spell that correctly?
Seriously, I've used lots of sealants over the years, & Right Stuff is by far the best. Just clean & dry the mating surfaces properly & it can't be beat.

Did my sump with gasket and a light coating of Right Stuff... not even a minor leak...

I used permantex on my 00 DII and those bolts went back in. The stock gasket I pulled off there was pretty thin -- nowhere near 1/8"

Ahhh....so maybe it's the 4.6 that has the thicker gasket...

What's the length and thread on those bolts? I lost them during my motor swap and I can't figure out the right thread on the bell housing... I've tried a bunch of different bolts to get a match and I'm getting lazy now....

Anyone know? Is there a washer and a nut on the pan side?
