I just started looking for a 04 DII and notice a lot of cars that I come across have engine problems or had the engines replaced. The mileage seems to be all over the place, any where from 60k to 90k. But it seem like quite a few people have had problems with the 4.6 is there a know issue or just a random thing.

I can honestly say that my d2 has never left me stranded. Its the only vehicle that I've owned that I can sat that for.

My D2 hasn't left me stranded either. Even with a failing crank sensor, I was eventually able to get it home.

My D1 was pretty reliable too. When the fuel pump failed, it was parked in the garage. It did leave me stranded with the starter went out, but any car would do that.

My advice, for what it's worth, is to build a few hundred bucks into having a Rover specialist perform pre-buy inspections on the handful that you look at, look for good service record keeping (head gaskets around 60K, driveshaft service, water pump) and finally assume you're going to have to spend a few grand in repairs soon after you buy- even though hopefully you won't.

If the extra dough associated with this commitment is too much to swallow, buy a 4 runner.

Mine broke down within 10 minutes of driving away. Kept me pretty busy for the first few months. Been very reliable ever since. Wife has put about 70K on it in the last 4 years. If my math is right thats about 16K in fuel.

Could be worse...a guy over on RR.net bought a Callaway Range Rover and it burned to the ground on the interstate on the way home. Sucks to be that guy.

Is there a reason the 4.6is more problematic the the D1 with the 4.0?
One theory is that the larger bore doesn't leave enough material between the cylinder and the water passages. Others talk about how the tolerances are shit since the tooling was worn out by the time the 4.6 blocks were cast.
