Dipstick!

Hey all-my question concerns the oil level on my 99 DiscoII. This is an old question that I am directing new attention to. I bought my DiscoII used almost 2 years ago. I noticed oil level registering high on the dipstick. I drained and refilled, complete drain with oil filter, let it drain over night....you get the idea. I've used a 5qt container of Mobil1 as my benchmark. I know it will hold at least 6qts. Many, many oil changes later...still the same. I've taken it to Land Rover, they tried a new dipstick...still the same. They told me to just put 5 qts in it since it was registering high like that. Bear Valley (where I bought it from) the tech said to put the normal amount of oil in it and mark on the dipstick where THAT mark is and use that. She runs great. My wife now uses it as a daily driver to Atlanta, 90 miles a day...I figured I ought to make sure evrything is in good running order.

Any fresh ideas out there? Thanks in advance.

Any chance the dipstick tube has some how gotten push down? I would have to go out and look to even see if this is possible, so this is more of a guess.

For what's it worth...

...the manual does say 6 quarts, but I have never used 6 quarts. Everytime the dipstick shows full, it turns out to be about 5 quarts. Been this way since oil change number one.

Call The Rover Shoppe in Houston tomorrow and ask for Vic... see what he says. They change the oil on thousands of Discos... (713) 526-8482.

The clamp on the side of the engine may not have been installed properly at the factory. Its just a short tube that pushes into the block and may not be fully seated.

And to be honest, I don't even check the oil level after I put in the required number of quarts.

I have seen some discos with enough build up to make up for a quart or two. FWIW my trucks all take 6.5 to 7 quarts.

Thanks guys...any new ideas welcome. I used to rack my brain about this when I first got the Disco-but kinda just gave up on it since it didn't seem to bother anything. Speaking of build up, I did pull the records on it (@ the LR dealership) and it had already received the valve job or the maintenance required to remove any deposit. That was the second thing that the tech checked for. Thanks for the contact in Houston, I'll call them tomorrow.

oil pan

I found this on my Disco 1
I removed the oil pan to fit a new gasket and found near a qt and a half of crap in the pan.
Thye displacement accounted for the short fall in oil.

hmm... interesting.

I guess I will be yanking the pan tomorrow (just for shits and grins) to see what's in there... but... like I said... it's always been this way... 5 quarts... since the day I did the very first oil change at 3000 miles.

Might as well change the diff oil as well...

Thanks... you bastards...

... and to think I wasn't going to do anything at all. :D

If I attempt to drop the oil pan...I assume that all I'll need before I do it is an oil pan gasket to replace the old one?

That's what I use, too. If you can't find it locally, I have a few spares.

With all of these oil changes, were you changing the filter? The empty filter would account for
the missing oil..... eddie
