Hello all.
Forgive me for I am new to this forum. I have a 98 disco 1, 4.0 165k miles , about a week ago it started making a ticking/clacking noise from the center of the engine so I crawled under it and it was loudest at the front of the oil pan but also on the drivers side of the engine. Went home straight away and started researching, I found people saying it is a bad oil pump, bad oil/wrong weight oil, camshaft and lifters, flex plate, slipped cyllinder, and ect. I brought it to the local rover guy and he was positive that it was the cam and lifters and suggested an oil thickener to quiet it down for the time being or til I can get it in the shop. So I changed the oil from 10w40 to 15w40 with the thickener and no change. Brought it back today and he saw that one of the pulleys is off kilter. Called over a few other mechanics and had them crawl underneath without telling them the issue. They all said slipped cylinder or cam and lifters. Don't know if it's a common problem or not but I might as well share my experience with all this so far. He didn't have time to take the simple stuff off to see if something was just loose but said that's a good start. He suggested a new/used junkyard motor instead of new parts cause he's never heard of this problem before and thinks it'd be the cheapest option, and me being a 17 year old with a budget I thought the same. I don't really know what to do, just putting this out for some feedback and more suggestions. This being my first car and rover they said that it's in really good condition and suggest I keep it.

I doubt it's a slipped cylinder - slipped liner maybe. But it could be any or all of the above.
Search for "ticking", it's pretty common.

It's definitely not a power steering pump issue. It comes from the left of the phelum and it's loudest at the front of the oil pan. I'm pretty sure its the cam and lifters. Has this happened to anyone else? How much was it to replace?

That will be my first check. To me it sounds more like air/exhaust than something "mechanical'.

Grab a piece of hose long enough to reach down to the exhaust manifold areas, hold one end to your ear and poke the other around the exhaust manifold - you should hear it when you hit the leak.

I've had it for 10 months and put 12k miles on it. Oil has been done very 3k miles. Never let it run low. Im the third owner of this truck

I have a 2000 Disco II, mine makes the same ticking. About 15 months ago it started. I was quite worried about it thinking I was just a couple of miles from throwing a rod. I took it to my trusted Rover mechanic, he listened to it for about 5 seconds and said "don't worry about it, they all make that sound. Some sooner than others but eventually they all do. My wifes disco makes the exact same sound. If you really want I can change some parts and make some adjustments but the engine won't run any better, it will just be a little quieter. If it were me, I would just drive it." I took his advice and have put almost 15,000 miles on it since then. No issues other than it still ticks while at idle, if I remember correctly it is more pronounced after it is warmed up.

Mine used to tick - pretty loudly. I found that my valves were sticking after the engine warmed up and that lead to the cam lobes being wiped and the lifters being dished. I replaced the cam and lifters and had the heads done and no more ticking, quiet as a whisper now.
FWIW before pulling the engine apart I drained 1qt of oil and dumped in 1qt of MMO (yes I know it's crap) and took it for an hour long drive - no more ticking. YMMV

Mine use to tick, I put in 1 qt of ATF, run it for 1/2 an hour before the oil change after that the tick slowly faded away.
