Disco 1 wouldn't start, then it did

But since I would prefer not being stranded at some point, I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what happened (though I suspect I do know, I want to be sure).

Get back to work yesterday from a 2 day trip. I left the Discovery parked at the office. No lights were left on. Vehicle was locked. I unlocked it. Started it. Drove it home. Parked it. Did not leave any lights on. Did not lock it (I never lock it at home, keys usually sit in it).

Decided to go to dinner with the rib that night. Wanted to take the Discovery since it was raining and I can sit higher and see better. Got in, put the key in the ignition (I had taken the keys inside with me this time), turned the ignition:

Nothing other than a barely audible click somewhere in the engine compartment. Lights, radio, etc, all work.

I jiggle the gear selector and try to start in D and in N: Nothing other than a barely audible click.

Take her car to dinner. Look about on the phone while at dinner and see it could be something with the key fob. Get home, lock the car (except driver's door is open), unlock it. Try to start it. Nothing. Barely audible click.

Bring the wife outside this morning so she can try starting it while I tap the starter with a hammer. This time I have the keys with me so I lock the Discovery (all doors shut) and unlock it.

Put the key in and it starts right up.

So I am assuming I had somehow tripped an immobilizer and it wouldn't right itself until I locked the vehicle (with all four door shut, though I'm not sure how it would know) and unlocked it. Locking it with one door open and unlocking it did not do the trick.

Or the starter could have unstuck itself?

Well I thought it was a key issue. Won't start today.

After posting on the 22d it started up fine the 23d and ran errands in it, starting and stopping.

Went to CO on the 24th and returned today. Went out to start it: Nothing. Just a single click under the hood somewhere. Wife had to go to work so I can't isolate it.

All lights work (even off road lights, all dash gauges come on, horn works, radio works, etc). it's not the click click click of a "ha ha sucker, you have a dead battery" - it's just one single click when I turn the key. Turn it off, turn it on, dash lights up, one turn of the key and one click.

I tried locking and unlocking it (since that's what I thought was the problem before) and nothing. Click. No start.

Ideas? This sounds like a starter I'm guessing.

The good news is if that's your problem it's an easy and relatively cheap fix.

While you're ordering I recommend a new set of battery cables. If yours are the factory originals putting in a new set would be cheap insurance/preventative maintenance. You'll have to disconnect the cables anyway so might as well get a fresh set in there for $30-$50.

When I had starting issues I ended up replacing my battery (needed anyway) and starter before realizing it was the cables.

Was afraid of that. I'll crawl under it tomorrow and make sure all the connections are good before ordering.
Nothing to worry about. You need an 8-mm Allen, and there's plenty of space around the starter to use adapters and U-joints between the ratchets and various extenders.
The worst part of the job is all that oily dirt falling into your eyes. But that's about it.

I found the worst part of the job to be re-installing the heat shield. Small hands and triple-jointed wrists help.

Even though the lights seem OK, but starter only clicks does not mean the battery is good. It did set for a few days and the weather changing can affect it greatly, and how old is it?

It's pretty new. Optima Yellow Top. I've got a digital reader set on the positive terminal.

It reads 14.0 running

12.7 when off

It started sluggishly today in the afternoon when warm outside. Didn't start in morning when cold.

Why yellow top? Isn't that better suited as the deep-cycle secondary battery to power lights/winch/fridge/hairdryer/cappuccino maker? Of the Optima range I thought the red top was better suited to be the starting/primary battery.

That's what it had when I bought it.

Don't procrastinate with the starter - it will not give you too many warnings.
(one just died on one of my trucks).

ha.

It actually started yesterday morning, but then wouldn't start at work yesterday afternoon.

I was able to jump the battery and get enough juice to it to convince it to start though.

Now it will sit until the starter arrives and I can switch it out.

Pull the battery and bring it in for a load test. I bet it has a bad cell & your CCA are low to nil. Just happened to me this summer.

Very good point. I had a old yellow top in my 109 that I moved to my D1, only to discover it had a surface charge hiding the fact that two cells were dead.

Note: not a yellow top theme, just coincidence...

I'll definitely check the battery. I've already ordered a starter from a member so if it turns out to be the battery I'll have a starter on the shelf - figure they go bad eventually...

It never has given the "click click click" of a dead battery, nor even struggled when starting. It either started right up, or it didn't start at all and just gave the single click sound. But then I jumped it yesterday when it wouldn't start and it started right up easily.

Optima has turned to shit over the last few years. If it is bad, I would replace with something else if that's feasible.
