I know its been beaten to death, but just as a matter of sharing, I went 379 miles from gas station to gas station, on a 2001 Disco, mostly hwy, and the yellow light did not come on, the needle was on the last point before empty. I had A/C off for some time, and i am posting just because it seems to be my personal record in a long time. Prior to the 60K service some years ago I recall I had hit around 430 or 450 miles on one tank. Earlier this year, in March, on my drive to Florida from DC, the truck wanted gas about every 320 miles, and thats with new sparks/wires and being in a freshly-serviced OK shape. I wrote it down by mostly by the "winter" gas then. Still buffles me that a turboed 4-banger on my 99 Saab convertible can easily go beyond 500 miles on one tank, and thats 14 gallons.
My hunch is that A/C eats a lot of power (could there be something wrong with mine?) and that this transmission does need a long gear or maybe a couple, like 5th and 6th. That would keep the rpms low at 75 - 80 mph!

Wow, I get like, 200-240 mile to a tank.
I know, if I drive around town i get the same 200 - 240 miles per tank. With 379 it was mostly highway, at 70-75 mph. I sense that had I gone slower, around 65-70, the rpm needle would have been much closer to 2K rpm, which would have saved a lot more. I am riding properly inflated General tires, and properly inflated makes a difference too. It needs to be checked every season at least.

never seen more than 220miles to a tank. The one time I think I went like 230, I ran outta gas on the way to the station...thats HWY.

so, getting this hardly believable 379, is that with
-stock tires and gearing
-no roof rack
-somewhere flatter than areas like sedona and flagstaff
-not a modded HD rig with steel bumpers and winch

OR

are you magically getting 379 on built rig?

I honestly get a little better MPG with my ultra-gauge showing me how shitty it is. I've now started to keep my foot out of it, and drive a little slower. My personal best is.17.7 average, doing the math.

I put about 260 miles on my last tank and it only took 19 gallons to fill it up. I usually fill it up when I see the yellow light and even if I keep driving for a while it almost never takes more than 20 gallons. I could theoretically get about 340 miles on a tank but I don't want to run it dry to see how much of the 25 gallons is usable.

My '04 usually takes 19 or 20 gallons @ 220-240 miles. I don't let the light come on. Stock gearing, 265/75/16, rack/lights, armor. Not sure if a correction is needed on my truck due to the tire size.

Typical?

My RRC is used mostly for around town driving & only gets about 11 mpg. This past summer was the first time in a long time that I did a long hwy drive. At about 200 miles, which is normally almost empty, the gauge was just below half. Thought my gauge probably broke so I filled up.....nope.... 16 mpg!!!

My D1 gets 340 on the highway from one tank. That's at 65mph, mediocre stock-ish tires, no roof rack, no heavy duty nuthin', 1 driver + 1 passenger + 1 dog, with 150 pounds of cargo. And that's also northwest driving, going over 3,000'-4,000' mountain passes. Around town I get 220.

317 is my record and it died and i coasted to the pump. (on 32's)

350 easy in the P38. (no light on and it only has a 22gal tank. average 17-18mpg. It gets a solid 14 around town mix highway)

I think stock D2's get worse than actual MPG because the stock tires are a little smaller than the speedo reads IIRC. lifted or bigger tires, well your on your own on that one.

379? I'd check your odometer.
Yeah, stock everything, no roofrack, no wraparound guards, no sidesteps, just stock. Me and my daughter, DC to NYC and back. About half of the way I ran without A/C (economy button) as there was simply no need. Stock-like tires, only better, as stock Michelins were tires from Hell. I chose Generals as replacements, they used to be stock on Mercedes ML. Its the beginning of the end for these tires btw, as I had them on for almost tree years, but all I can say is that they are much quieter and show almost no cupping, like the stock Michelins did, but again those were tires from hell. These generals I liked mostly because they were like $60 a pop, but it was a few years back... This past winter during the blizzards we had, they took me where I wanted to go regardless of the amount of snow around. Again, I think in riding this amount of miles out of a tank the keys were relatively leisure-like driving on a highway, properly inflated tires, and no A/C for some time. There were periods of heavy traffic on the NJTurnpike, stop and go, and we had to circle around Manhattan a bit... But my ODO is good.

damn you rrc and d1 owners!!! $%^&#@!

Threads like this make me dream of a diesel conversion. Even 340 miles on a tank in my D1 is peanuts compared to 560 miles I could get from a 300 Tdi. Okay, time to wake up now.

I just did 1100 miles through Oregon two weekends ago and had several tanks where I averaged in the 18s and one in the 19s. Stock 4.6 and my mileage calculation is corrected for slightly larger AT tires.

I came home with the back loaded to the roof with shop tools including a huge table saw and 3-400 lbs of maple and walnut. I still managed in the 17s on the way home. The key is not doing 80.
