My brother and I replaced his starter in a DI, and it wasn't that big of deal. We had to remove a heat shield for the exhaust manifold, then the starter was held in by to screw with allen heads. On his the screws took quite a bit of effort to get out, but it only took us five minutes to change the starter out, once the screws decided to let loose. I would imagine it is the same for the DII.

i just replaced the starter on my DI.... this is a case of a simple job that was a Pain in the ass...

heres a few pointers...

1. the general idea of chaingeing the starter is EASY only two bolts hold it on... upper and lower 8mm hex wrench (allen bolt)

2. if at all possible STEAM CLEAN or hose down the ENTIRE area before you begin... if wheel and your disco leaks as much fluids as mine... its gonna be DIRTY AND GUNKY as hell down there... i used 4 cans of engine degreaser... and i still got grimy as hell when it came to pulling that POS off

3. the bottom bolt took all of 1 minute to pull... the top bolt removeal and installation (which you cant see) accounted for 90% of the entire 2hr job. its a bitch cause you cant see the damn thing.

4. because of the crammped quarters you will either need the perfect sized extension to remove the top bolt (5inch would do perfect) OR a couple LONG assed ones... i opted for long assed ones 4ft in total lenght. that allowed me to manuever around better and swing my rachet more completely then using a shorter extension and taking short turn

all in all... its a more difficult job only because of the top bolt... curse the engineers who designed that...

Ken,

Is the upper nut an allen or regular? And, what size is the nut? I would like to gather all my tools before I attack the project.

Thanks,

Vincent

same as the bottom 8mm allen bolt... BTW making sure you pressure clean the starter is very helpfull because the problem with the allen bolts is that the inside of the bolt (where the hex key fits in) can get filled up with CRUD... making inserting the hex key hard to do...

remember your fitting this thing in blind... which will be only harder / more frustrating if the damn bolt is full of crud...

good luck!!!!
