Hello there:

I am having a very difficult time deciding on which tires to get; I have a ?01 SE7 with ACE, SLS, 68K miles and worn out GY HPs 18s ?that sound like a helicopter.

In the past board members gave good information on my two primary choices: the Nitto Terra Grapplers and the Generals AT2. My mechanic tells me that I am not going to like the AT2 after a couple thousand miles and my tire guy tells me either model I will ?feel? more the road because of the tread pattern. Unfortunately I am still undecided on which to go; I have to make a decision this week as my tire guy is waiting for a phone call and the old tires are becoming a safety issue.

Here is why list of features from most important to least important:

1- Safety (make sure the wife and kids are safe while we take family trips)
2- Traction (New York winters require good traction) I don?t do any major off-road but often drive to camping grounds that have gravel and unpaved roads.
3- Looks (I like the look of all terrain tires but don?t know if I will like the everyday driving)
4- Durability (if I get 30K miles I will be happy, the GY HPs have been on for almost 40K miles)
5- Noise ( I don?t really care if the tires produce a bit of noise or less that the worn out GY HP as long as I got get any vibration with the AT tires.

Or should I just get Pirelli Scorpios STR or ATR or something more street like.

I don?t know, I am confused, Help please.

Thanks

Figman

The Goodyear's usually do end up sounding like helicopters, I had Yokohama AT2's did same thing. I'm currently running Bridgestone At's, they're quieter than my wife's Michelin's on her Lexus, seem to be wearing good. Don't make much if any noise and the price is pretty good. So far been on a few off-road trips, no flats either. When I bought the Disco it had General AT's on it, they're like rags, got 2 flats in one weekend on roads I've driven with the Bridgestones without getting flats.

sticking with 18's in your case, i would get a snow rated tire first off, i would get 265/60/18 which is the biggest you can put on a D2 with no lift and modifications....tire wise as much as i hate Good years the goodyear silent armor AT is made in the 265/60/18 and snow rated with a milage warranty and can be had for around $150 a tire, My neighbor has this setup and i have driven and worked on his tuck quite a bit and it rides very well, this is about the only goodyear tire i have really liked, they are nothing like the stock crap land rover uses

You get better tires on a Kia then the ones LR puts on stock vehicles. They must pay Goodyear like $10 a tire for them.

I've gotten just over 55K out of my Nitto's. 285/60/18's. They will need to be replaced in the next few months though. All told I'll probably get 60K out of them. They rock in the snow and wet. Just wish they made a slightly narrower version with the same height...

I agree on the Nitto Terra Grapplers. I am pushing 60k on mine as well. I have driven in every snow and ice condition imaginable from NY, to VT, to the far North of Canada and they always provided reliable grip. I have also navigated snowmobile trails in VT in the very muddy early spring/late winter and have spent plenty of time foraging trails in the woods of New England. I think a true mud tire would be better in the woods and mud but if you spend most of your time on the road be it paved or unpaved the Nitto Terra Grappler will not let you down.

P.S. The Nitto's are barely audible as far as noise goes..

I've liked the Michelin XPC 4x4 on two discos, lots of miles, stock size, good winter and summer and even have performed well in mud.
