I've got the 2004 D2. it's a pretty clean and straight vehicle. I'm learning my way around it and all the nuances. I've come to realize this isn't really a car, it's a hobby. I wasn't shopping for a hobby but it seems I found one, or one found me. Replaced crank sensor in first week of ownership. Then I had issue with the xyz switch but it seems cleaning all the power and grounds has resolved that. Huge thanks to all the members here for the tips and support on that one. The climate control seems to be hit or miss but usually works like 98%. I am on the fence whether I really want to keep this thing. I own two boats, a couple jet skis, dirt bike, house, property, tractor, teenager, my own business, and I work for another company. I really don't need another hobby. What i need is a cloning device. So, here it is,... It just so happens that a near by neighbor is selling an 03 D2. he's asking 1800.00 but it has over 200 k and plenty of issues. Oil leaks, coolant leaks, need power steer pump, window motor inop, rear door inop. I gotta believe there is more problems.

So,... do I offer him a grand for a donor vehicle? I'm not even sure about interchangeability. 2003 to 2004. Do I really want a donor? Or should I dump what I have and buy a Forerunner? That's rhetorical. I am buying the forerunner. But what to do with these rovers?

Other than the transfer case everything is interchangeable between the 2. Even the transfer case is the same except the 03 doesn't have cdl.

center differential lock. As opposed to traction control. CDL is desirable if you plan to go off road. If you can get a grand for a donor vehicle and have a place to store it while you cannibalize it then it's a good investment. You can always sell off parts you don't anticipate needing (wheels, roof rails, etc.) to help offset the purchase cost. If there are enough bits off the 2004 that would make it worth your while then buying it will make it easier to keep the 2003 up to scratch.

It's the 04 we are currently running but I get your point. The 04 (ours) currently has about 109k on it. It's a clean and straight vehicle. Previous owner garage kept it. We bought it late fall and my wife drove through the winter. I did play around with the diff lock in some deep snow during the spring thaw. I was thoroughly impressed, especially since a kid in a jeep came through after I had knocked it down and he ended up getting stuck. I was running around in circles with no problem.

Most vehicles start having troubles at 100k. You push through that and your ussally good for a while.

I wouldn't pay more than $700 for something with 200k miles unless it is really clean.

I haven't given it a thorough look. I talked to the owner. I see him driving it around a little. Body looks to be in good condition. No visible dents or dings from passing by but I haven't been up close to it. He says he just doesn't have the resources to maintain it or fix what needs fixed. He says someone is coming to look at it Wednesday and he'd let me know if it falls through. I'm not super serious about it but thanks for the tip on pricing. I see these things really ranging in price so it's hard to gauge when you're not familiar with them. If I can pick it up cheap then maybe I'll do it.
