Disco I Rear Step Question

Sorry my first post isn't more interesting, however, I have a problem with the rear step on my '96 Disco. The hydro shock went out. Can you replace just the shock, or do you have to buy the $100 kit? Thanks for any help provided.

You may be able to find a used one at a junkyard as well.
