Hi all,

1 month age i bought a disco 1998 v8 with 215000km
I have just got rid of my 2002 defender so i need some info on suspension. Went off road today and found that the disco wallows and bottoms out long before the defender. sure its way more comfy but what do you folk reccomend for a suspension upgrade?
i am looking at monroe or an iron man shock and coil kit - please help.
cheers ,mike

Oh boy here we go again!

Most of us are already green with envy because you was able to have an '02 Defender. We don't get to have new Defenders in the U.S.

The stock suspension is shot. How many miles is 215000km? Oh well that dosen't matter. The rig wallows and bottoms out too much so it is time to replace it. I did the ARB springs and OME shocks - the part numbers was what ever Ho and the people at Expeditation Exchange say gives a two inch medium lift with a winch and aftermarket bumper.

I used two floor jacks, a set of jack stands, a pocket full of simple hand tools, a six pack of beer, and a dis-interested teen age son. The job took four hours because the beer was in a cooler outside the shop.

I am happy with ARB/OME suspension but just wait a few hours and there will be a food fight from hell here over what everybody else thinks.

Grab a roll of paper towels and enjoy!

BTW how much did you sell the '02 Defender for if I may ask?

Hi Mike,

A lot of us folks on this side of the pond prefer Rovertym suspension, but in your case I'd suggest OME springs and shocks. I would assume they are readily available to you there. If you don't mind the shipping costs go here for Rovertym:

www.rovertym.com .

They are a great company but again you might save bucks by getting Old Man Emu locally. For research on OME, Expedition Exchange here in California has a great informational page here:

https://www.expeditionexchange.com/ome/indexsprings.htm

Best of luck and welcome,

Mike

Welcome this a terrific resource & glad you found us!
I just love how anyone with a Disco is all of a sudden an expert!
To answer your Q's some info would help;
What do you plan to use it for?
How much weight do you carry?
Is you truck a daily driver as well?
How extreme do you want to go?

There are huge differences between the two trucks. The disco hind end is pretty heavy so setting them up correctly takes a little doing.

for stock geared or for 2" running up to 265 75 go ome or rte
less money
more reliable less driveline concerns

for 3" running 255/85 or 285/75 go rte
you'll be needing to regear and will need to be careful about driveline

do postsome pics of the land around you
and welcome

Good morning all
wow such good service!! and ta too all
A 215000km = 135000miles
A ome is readily available but expensive here 12k in our currency = +/- $2k carry 3 up and some tools and a engel fridge
A Sold the defender for R130k = $19k i am buying another disco for my son's wedding present and another defender which he & i will "butcher" for bush bashing
May i ask the reason for not being able to aquire land rover kit over there? like defender - is it a safety thing?

What is the general feeling toward the hummer h3 ? We think its a shed!!
thanks all

Damn, it only took you ONE six pack to complete the lift! I must have been doing something terribly wrong.

Not entirely true!

are you suggesting one can take a 1998 d1, go 3" rte and run 33's on stock gearing, axles and shafts with out any concerns? IIRC d1 needed some minor trimming to run a 285 or 255

I could be wrong, just asking. I own a d2, and while its a dog on hwy with stock gears and 33s I am glad I have a 4.6
