hi.

I have a 1999 Disco 2 V8. It is using a lot of oil, nearly 1 litre per 100k's! Just had the valve stems replaced and injectors done, still using oil. The Disco has 324K's on the clock. Any ideas?

1. How much oil is it using?
2. Plugged all the leaks?
3. Does it smoke? If so when and what color?
4. What weight oil you running?
5. Done a compression test?

There should be some outward sign of leakage. It may take a good powerwashing underneath to clean up enough the see it. I'd suspect VC gaskets but you say head work was just completed. Is there heavy soot in the exhaust tip? Is the oil cap cracked and leaking air allowing oil to get sucked into the intake at an abnormal rate? Check the PCV system for blockage. High mileage engines have loose rings by default so a blocked (pressurized) system may actually be helping oil get pulled into the cylinders and burned or just pushing it pass seals when under power. Is the plastic oil separator in the PS valve cover missing?

Fixed it for ya.

BTW. That's a shit-ton of oil. Gotta be going somewhere. Look closer.

With that much consumption, I'd guess rings are gone, and/or the valves are leaking.

I had a suburban (5.3 L) that was burning a qt every tank (350 mi), due to piston #7 having no rings.

But since you had a valve job, and then the problem, my money would be there.

Yeah, but the OP said no visible smoke. I don't see how that much oil is going through the valves and into the cylinders and you would not see smoke. I used to have an old Mustang that used that much oil. I use a case of oil driving from Upstate NY to NC one time. It didn't smoke much at idle but if I laid into the throttle it left a smoke screen like I was playing Spy Hunter.
