I was going back to work today from lunch and my Disco started to shake badly. At first I thought it was a flat tire, but it wasn't. I limped back to work figuring I'd put it on the lift after work to check it out. Well the day went by and I threw it on the lift and saw that a U-joint on the front driveshaft was broken. I still had to still drive home so I decided to take the front driveshaft off, which I did. I lowered the Rover back down, started it back up, threw it in reverse...nothing, it didn't move. I put it in drive, nada. What the hell? I looked under it and I could see (and hear) the front (DS flange) spinning at the t-case. I put the thing in locked 4 high and it was fine, forward and reverse. Is this normal? I'm no expert, but I had assumed that if you take the front driveshaft off it wouldn't affect the rear. Is something broken?

Thanks.

this is normal. need to lock the diffs before you remove the shaft or no go vroom vroom...
this should alert you to the fact that the 4-wheel drive system aint all that fancy w/out the center lock!

if your unlocked and one wheel looses contact...thats where all the power is headed...so your stuck! although you can sometimes tap the brakes a bit and keep rolling.
