When I was reading the original thread/post on the coil relocation kit I think their biggest issue was finding Plug N Play connectors for the coil packs. Anyone can just cut the OEM harness and extend the wiring, but I remember the guy making the relocation kit wanted it to be where you could go back to the OEM setup if needed.

I personally find the relocation kit a waste of $$$. The original coil packs do not go out that often (got 233K out of a set on my 02 Kalahari for example). Removing the intake is not that big of a deal and I can probably do the job now in 30min (SAI does take a little longer).

The main thing I see with the relocation kit = if a wire has an issue you can't just run down to your nearest auto store and grab a cheap set of wires to get you back on the road since the relocation kit wires are not much much longer. Sure you can purchase one of those spark plug wire kits that you make yourself, but they will not have the proper end for the coil packs.

I myself will never see myself buying or ever using the relocation kit, but to each their own.

They are just JPT connectors. Mouser and digikey have them in stock. Nothing exotic at all

I just bet any disco that somebody is spending time on a project like "relocating coils" has some real problems that could keep you busy instead.

why would you think that?

as I said, in my case, I have the opportunity to do this modification while in the middle of doing the head gaskets; why wouldn’t I want to move the coils from an extremely hard to access location; so that future repairs are easier to accomplish?

Because all this has been sorted out by engineers. It's not that hard to get at the damn coils, and it's not like you have to do something with them every week. I say that the truck probably has some more pressing issues that could keep you busy if it's just that you need something to occupy your time. I know that because I know these trucks pretty well. There is bound to be some problem on your truck that is way more pressing than redesigning a wheel.Or relocating coil packs

Male to Female? When I read the write up I swear I remember all kinds of info on tracking down the correct connector to make it PNP. Never thought twice about it as it wasn't something I was interested in.

Yeah I'd be more worried about rusty frames, leaking sunroofs, saggy headliners, and heck an OEM stereo knob with a mind of it's own. Like Disco said you rarely ever have to swap coils out.

Youre right, I thin I was the instigator. Anway the JPT connectors are as old as electronic fuel injection, but I dont see it as necessary

ive gone through more transmissions than D1 coil packs, Id assume D2 packs are at least as reliable

well, you know what they say about opinions....

“they aren’t that hard to get at”.... except that is a complete falsehood. Because you cannot remove the coils for repair or replacement without removing the upper intake....So there’s that.

beyond that, it is pretty arrogant to stand around believing you above all others know more about what anyone else needs to do with their own vehicle....than they do.

narcissism is a disease....not a virtue.

No I don't think I know more than everyone. Move your coils, it's your truck. Just know that that will be the first step in making a molested piece of shit. But at least your doing this shit to a Disco2. It was a piece of shit already.
Your going to fit right in here with your ability to diagnose personality disorders over the internet.

your wife and dog must really hate it when you get mad at people on the internet....

“molested piece of shit”..... “the engineers built it that way”.

so in your infinite wisdom any modifications made to a vehicle are “molested pieces of shit”.

by that token....since they don’t come from the factory with 2” lifts, or 36” tires, or snorkels....then those are all modifications that turn them into “pieces of shit” too....I guess the people who remove the ACE and perform the facelift are all “Pieces of shit” because they don’t suck on the dick of engineers who built two of the worst motors in modern automotive history....right?

I wonder....why are you here, in this thread, and this forum, specifically about Discos? I mean they are pieces of shit....so you obviously do not have one; shouldn’t you be off somewhere wearing a hair net, and fishnets....sucking dicks for rides in Jeep CJs?

nobody gives a fuck what you think they should or should not do with their vehicles....

A coil relocation kit is recommended by people on Facebook who drive $500 clapped out Discoverys. There is no reason whatsoever to do this. The coils last a very long time. If one fails, replace with Genuine and it will last a long time. These people are constantly replacing plug wires because they buy cheap shit from the UK.
Jimmy,

I can't remember when I had to replace a set of wires because of wire-caused misfires, so wires do last a long time. But...
One reason to replace a plug wire is accidentally breaking the spark plug or ripping the connector off the plug wire. Another is insulation chaffed through by something close by. I have had plenty of these occasions over the years; even the most-expensive wires seem to be terminated really badly.
I'd hate life badly if I had to swap out the accidentally damaged wire in a D2 on a trail.

Well to be clear, only the Disco2 is a piece of shit.
Why is it that people like you who fly off the handle think that the other person gives a fuck?
The Disco2 is just a good example of how BMW fucked up a really good truck.

Will had a truck he bought that had it, and it looked to be in the way of most anything else you might need to do in the mean time. Not worth the hassle in my mind.

I can get the coils out of there without taking off the plenum. Just saying.

Any modification is a trade off. Even the engineers at Land Rover struggled with it. Just look at the brush guard accessory for a D1. Looked cool but royally screwed up your hood it you happen bump anything with it.

He's not worth considering.

The coil packs are in an irritating location, and they can indeed hiccup. When it happens, diagnosing the issue is a pain.

If you want to move them, go right ahead. Every time I've had to replace one I considered it, and never got around to it.

Since the engine is coming out soon anyway, I'm going to move the things. I wouldn't say it's "necessary", but if it bugs you, there's nothing wrong with it, and there are clean ways to manage the wires if you care and put your mind to it.

All you're doing is extending cables. The coils were already mounted in an oven, so there's really not much of a wrong place to put them; though I'd try to keep them high and dry.

The Ebay kit was actually pretty high quality, but I didn't think to pick it up. I'm not sure I was entirely enthusiastic about the location, but for an all in one kit it was pretty nice. It's nothing you can't do yourself if you just buy some cut to fit cable, though. It's incredibly common.

Cheers,

Kennith
