Discovery Gas Cap

Can someone tell me why the gas caps stick after around 8 to 10 months of use. I have had my Disco for 6 years and am on my fourth gas cap. They become so sticky which prevents proper seal, therefore throws false misfire codes.

Thanks to everyone for the great comments. I sanded my old STANT replacement gas cap with 80 grit sand paper, only 10 turns. Then I used a fine sand paper to smooth out. Third fill-up and no sticking.

For those who are throwing codes. I would get misfire cylinder 3 and misfire cylinder 8 when my cap was not tightened all the way down. But, that is why I kept replacing the cap. Can't remember if that was related to code 441.

This is such a great forum. Thanks again!!!

because the filler neck is distorted and the factory caps arent stant anymore. get a STANT and it will last alot longer. there is a tsb about the filler neck and it calls fore complete replacement...

even the stants do it. take some scotch brite to the aluminum and/or file the threads down a bit on the fuel cap. rovers=quality!

not sure but this is what i found for what the possible cause could be:

A code P0441 could mean one or more of the following has happened:
Bad vacuum switch
Broken or damaged EVAP line or canister
Open in PCM purge command circuit
Open or short in Voltage feed circuit to Purge Solenoid
Faulty purge solenoid
Restriction in EVAP solenoid, line or canister
Corrosion or resistance in purge connector
Bad PCM

Bad trickle valve causes that too iirc.

What is the trickle valve and where is it located? My 2003 keeps giving me incorrect purge flow. Every time I exchange the purge valve for a new one the fault clears for about 2 weeks then comes back again. I don't know if it is because I keep using the cheaper $40-$50 part and not a Bosch or whatever comes factory, or if I have an underlying problem in the EVAP system.

The trickle valve is near the top of the filler neck. Some of these guys say they have seen strange stuff happen with them. I've really only seen them leak and cause the small leak codes.

I'm pretty sure the P0441 just means its either broken or its not working right.

You need to follow the thread I started "Is this supposed to be loose? P0441" in the title. I've done as you have with replacing purge valves, but I'm convinced they work as they should. It is something else.
