Well, don't TT's help with the spinning wheel making it a lot better than stock diffs? I suppose seeing as I already have a minor lift, lockers could be first at this point but I'm not sure I agree it would have been best overall choice on stock disco1 seeing as part of what I'd be into are deep snow and the lift helps immediately allowing more clearance and chains together on surfaces where the wheels would all be touching anyway.

Does this train of thought change at all if the vehicle chosen is an 04 DII because the traction control helps reduce the wheel spin a little?

are you saying that suspension does not help with improving traction?

go ahead, spend your money and lock a stock disco. you'll have to dump money into axles, as well. for what? to be able to spin those radial tires that you have becuase you can't fit anything bigger?

as cheap as a 2" lift is, why not add the lift to make room for larger tires with better tread? those lockers sure will get you far when your diffs are dragging across everything and those little radials are burning on rocks and not self-cleaning the mud out.

I thought I'd posted this isn't fully stock - it has a ~2" or less medium duty spring kit and bilstiens, albeit installed 120,000 miles ago, but it allows the slightly larger than stock 245/75 tires on it now.

Mods considered:

LIFT - RTE 3", mainly to make it more capable but not so much that using the car for a backup for 300 mile work trips via highway will be terrible. I'd plan to use my 2 sets of 16" wheels for dd (245/75 bfg at already on the stock rims) and trail trips (probably 85 series bfg km2 33" or so)

Lift first if nothing else, seems the first place to start.

to me, all of this said it was stock. but, that doesnt matter, its beside the point.

my opinion is lift first, get it set up right. this is something i failed to do. i didnt go with radius arms and trailing arms and retained springs and extended lines up front. i would do all of that first, then look at lockers.

lutzgaterr, i get what you're saying now. :victory:

Thanks - all very helpful in deciding what to do first and what to include in stages so as to do it right at the right time too.

Understand your need to lift before diffs/axles are changed.
Yea, it's all too damn connected as you know so once yo start down that mod-trail, it seems like it never ends.
