Do I need an alternator??

Recently my 1996 Disco has been having issues. The other day my tachometer quit working, and still is not working. Yesterday I was driving with the heat, stereo and lights on and all of a sudden the radio and the abs light starts flashing on and off. I took the car to autozone where they tested the battery and the alternator. They said everything was fine allthough my heavy duty battery was low a 1/2 volt.

So my question is this: Do I need an alternator or a preist? If I do need an alternator, do I need to buy one from land rover or can I just buy one from Autozone? Please let me know asap.

Heidi- I think that you will have to do some investigating, with the heat on, things expand thus you might just have a loose ground wire in your dash, i would start with the ground wires first , let us know how you make out -Andy

Hi Heidi,

I had a similar problem. Try doing a search to see what others have suggested. Here are a couple to start with:

I ended up ordering a new alternator, and opted for a brand new, high output from Mean Green. It really wasn't much more expensive than a rebuilt standard amp alt. It still hasn't arrived, though :(

You can go the preist route but it's my understanding the they mostly go for alter boys :D

I also have a '96, SE-7 and the alternator went out a while back. Actually, the tach went out first and all it was is that there is a small connector on the back or the alt. and I cleaned it up and that worked for a day and then stopped. I investigated further and found out that the wire on the connector was loose. I cut off the old one and crimmped on a new connector and that fixed it. Of course, then the alt. started screamming one day and I had to get a new one. Good Luck and welcome to DiscoWeb, Ron

You will need to do a belt upgrade as well with the mean green if you go with this one. The Disco Alt should put out 13.68-14.70 V.
