Well that is great!!! I am so happy to hear everything is turning out ok. I also love the fact that it turned into an adventure for you. That is always fun. I am sure there were frustrating times but I am also sure that you have almost if not already gotten to a point of laughing at it all. I hope anyway.

All in all it builds character....haha. Well congradulations and Happy Travels!!!!!! :D

I'll bet that that Bosch reman is dead in a year or less. My supplier said the Bosch have had a 33% failure rate. Never would have expected it from a normally reliable company like Bosch. We tried half a dozen through my shop and 5 of them failed between 3-11 months.

I know I have heard that too.. I was told they put them on a factory line and throw new bearings ect ect ..Which is why I went local. If it fails to start then @ least I can go to them and have a "new" one ASAP.

Steve how many miles on the D1 after the new Alt??

I think it was about 80K when the alternator and belt were replaced, it's at 102K now.
The original alternator went out slowly and I replaced it before it failed completely as part of the refurb I did on it after I bought it. I can't recall the warranty I got on the replacement, but it was significant. Kinda reminds me that I need to organize my files...

If this one dies and is out of warranty, I'll just have Arlington Armature rebuild it and soup it up a bit. They do some nice custom work- they did a jag generator for me awhile back and doubled the output on it.

Steve: I wanted to do something similar but time was of the essence! And I needed the Alt today! My original alternator had a slow death in deed, but hey now I get 14.29 Volts! That is more than my other Alt ever put out!

And I thought chicks liked to go to the mall and shop around.
Sounds like you got the right Alt though!
I need one that puts out more than my other one too! :D

That's another thing that is strange about LR. Seems they all do less than 14V from the factory, but almost every other brand of car or truck I've owned ran over 14V.

my guy the wizard or the rebuild says the merelli voltage regulator clicks off at 13.7 volts...so thats what it puts out.

I have about 45k on my current rebuild I believe and it has been dunked a couple times and now is living under a good thick layer of insulating mud :D

Made it!

Yesterday we made it to Boise safe and sound. The trip was really uneventful, which is good considering the Disco was trying it's best to get some attention from us ;) (The top of the radiator plug blew off the day before we left as well)

The trip went pretty much the same as the day before. We didn't want to have to stop on the side of the highway with semis rollin' past at 70+ again, so we swapped in a new battery when we stopped for gas. So about every 2.5hrs and a bit under 250 miles we'd make a stop. I gotta think that even though the alternator was on it's way out that it was still helping some. If I can find a voltmeter cheap when we're out today I'm gonna pick that up to see how the alternator was really doing here at the end.

So now I just need to look around and figure out exactly what to get for a new alternator and other parts that are going on the truck, like the main drive belt. That's getting replaced for sure. I don't really plan on doing any wheeling till spring and the Disco is my second car, so I can take my time and do this right.

Kyle and Alice sure had it nailed. It was a great adventure (you can't expect a 10yr old Disco to not need some TLC on a 2,000+ mile trip), but it sure was ballsy.

BTW: anyone in the Boise area wanna buy some lightly used batteries??? :)

I know this isn't a land rover but, my old, old, old, car ( an 88 chevy Berretta ) that I had put a huge amount of stereo equipment in had 3 - 1000 amp batteries in it and I burned through a couple stock alternators before upgrading to a high out put one. The batteries were all wired together and I could drive about a week every day ( 40 or so miles daily ) before I'd have to charge them day or night driving I just wouldn't listen to the stereo... I'm thinking that a couple of charged optima yellow tops all wired together could get you a good distance before you'd have to charge them. If you are replacing your alternator you should get an upgraded one since your shelling out the money anyways.

the way i've always used to get places when my alt dies is to just stick an extra battery in the pass. seat and run a set of jumper cables from it to the one under the hood. hasn't failed me yet

Man that's funny. One year I was on my way to Rexburg Idaho to go to school in January. When I was going through Boise my battery light came on but it was a jeep so I didn't think anything of it :D Well I made it out just past Mountain Home when the car died all together. I sat on the side of the road for about an hour and made out with my finace' ;) until we got some help. A tow truck took us back to Mountain Home and let us know that the alternator had died and (of course) they didn't have the alternator in town. So they charged the battery and said you probably have about an hour to an hour an a half to get to Twin Falls with no heater, lights, radio... We made it and I was able to change out the alternator in the Napa parking lot and be our way. Good times

Thanks for the memories
