Does anyone have a clever way to transport fishing poles?

Hello! Love to fish & hunt! But when I take all 3 of my sons in the Rover we have a hard time w/fishing poles staying put! Anyone have a "brilliant" storage solution? Thank You, LRW.

Cheap & easy method: zip tie 'em to roof rack,,, cut 'em when you need 'em,,, zip tie 'em on way back. This way you can leave the reels on, and they don't rattle around as much.

I use a set of straps on the interior like Cabela's has;

Rod Saver Vehicle Rod Carrier

I can break down my 11 foot striper rod and even fit the 12+ foot hatteras heaver on the ceiling of the DI with this set of straps.

I attached D rings to the vinyl trim surrounding the alpine windows, clip the strap ends to the D rings and tighten. The tips of the long rods fit quite nicely into the pockets above the visors, the open loop of the first strap supports the middle (and the front of base sections that don't make it all the way forward) the velcro closures on the back strap hold the sections from sliding forward or back. Yes the upper section of my long rod has to go catty-corner to fit, but it does fit.

There are "fancier" hard bar solutions out there for the interior, but this one works just fine for rods broken down in the interior of a DI.

OBX Style Rod Holders

On the Outer Banks of NC (OBX) bumper mounted rod holders are the most common.

http://www.cabelas.com/products/Cpod0030775.jsp

They are most versatile and are often used to hold the rods while surf fishing ( 4 wheelen' on the beach is still legal - for now).

I have often chatted with people at gas stations way inland all over the country as it is easy to spot an OBX angler simply because of the distictive holders.

Indeed, but as those require a pair of tubular frame mounts to attach so they can be installed/removed easily, I went with a Surf Castor powder coated 4 banger about 8 years ago;

Heavy Duty Bumper 4-Rod Holder

and the associated license plate mount;

Bumper Mount

The nice thing is with the geniune A bar on my 98 D1, that combo fits right through the bar and looks stock. Powder coat matches and the rubber fingers to hold the reels to the tube, also look stock. Just the way I like it, nobody casually looking would notice what's going on, just functional.

The other thing is that I don't hang my fish/bait coolers off the front of the truck, like those OBX style, I keep the cooler inside and strapped down more like a four wheeler going offroad. I've fished Hatteras for quite a few years and you can get a pretty good woop-de-do thing going when traveling the sand out to the point. I therefore try to keep all the weight I can as close to the center of gravity of the truck. Keeps that boing-boing action from happening. Hence heavy items go inside the truck.

I do like those racks you see on the American trucks at OBX though, it is very convenient for cutting bait right off the front of the truck. Keeps the smelly stuff on the outside of the vehicle also.

One thing I found that works great, for holding the rods was a set of wire clamps that I believe came from Lowes Home Improvement store. They were plastic clamps that were meant to hold together wires on the back of your computer, or home entertainement equipment, and they work like handcuffs. What I like is that you can bundle your reels in a group and the clamps are easy to open and close. The package I got came with about 4 different sizes of clamps, so I use one of the small ones at the tips of the rod, and one of the big ones around the bases. Plus you can use the clamps to secure the rods to other objects (such as roof rack bars)

assuming detachable reels, a long piece of pvc pipe (2", 4" whatever) with screw on/off end caps zip tied to the roof rack works great.

Ok, I just made my own fishing pole carrier for my disco today and it mimics the $40 dollar set up I saw at bass pro, maybe not as pretty looking. I took some scrap wood lying in the garage and cut one to length that stretches between the alpine windows (I cut it a bit shorter and put a piece of sponge on the tip and then covered that with felt to prevent scratching and also when driving the body flex won't cause any stress). Then I took another piece of wood and put to hooks on the tips and hung it from the "oh sh*t" handles. Bought some rod savers and screwed them to the boards. No problems yet. Cost me under $10. I can take some pictures if anyone wants to see.
