a 305/70-16 is Overall Diameter: 32.81inches diameter

why not run a

285/75 for 32.8"

or for an even lighter tire 255/85 for 33.3" (I just got these)

or if you like
265/75 for 31.6"( had these)

any or all of these will perform better than a 70 series tire off road

thanks for all usefull info. 305/70/16 is 12" wide and 285/75/16 is 11.5(close enough) it's only an half inch wider and same height. I'm leaning toward to 285's now since they are little cheaper. originaly I was thinking about getting 33x12.5x15 but after doing some research, there are not whole alot of choice comes to the wheels because of d1 bolt pattern. 305/70/16 is closest of 16" tires that I could find so that's why I asked.

wider is better for a street car not true off road, lateral width is not as beneficial as fore-aft contact patch lenght, hence some of the discos on 235 do well, older rigs on 225s do well, and so far i am liking my 255s

I dont know but have heard/read that 285 can rub on full lock...on a d2, not so sure about fitment on a d1...

I'm sure if you offset the wheels right, it won't rub. but I'm assuming more cutting would be needed.

sorryI and think many others will agree, I dont see the advantage of running so wide a tire with so little sidewall..
x2 i almost regret 265-75-16s after my 245-75-16s you just 'feel' things ain't right,i'm no hardcore 4x4 superstar, its just a recreational family touring rig that i use to get to some remote places occasionally,so not really up to do the lot. i think tall skinnies are next, sooner than later,i do alot of sand driving however,so the bagging tire effect is ,IMO,easier to achieve with wider 'stiff sidewall' mud tires than skinnies....comments?

I run 235/85-16 on a standard drive train. They are excellent and cope with most things. The Land Rover drives shafts and diff anr strong weough for most applications but it you drive like a maniac and try to power through every obstical you will break things.

OK, BUT that looks like a dirt road compared to what I drive on. The rocks in Maine will destroy skinny tires...ask me how I know this:D
