I keep burning up drivers side brake lights, they last no longer than a month and its really starting to bug me. It looks like someone tried to tap into the brake light to the trailer harness but I removed the splice last time I replaced the bulb. Any thoughts on this?

the whole light assembly is held on with 2 wing nuts. sqeeze your hands in behind and remove the whole thing. remove the brake light and look at the metal socket it came out of. the plastic around it will get melted and cause bad connections.....clean that shit up, de-corrode as needed, bend the tabs back out a bit and re-install. in severe cases you may need new parts......but its usually "macgyverable"

enjoy!

That's interesting. I've had to jiggle my DS rear brake light a few times to get it working. It's never burnt out.

Is this related to my completely melted front passenger-side turn signal light? (I fixed it my way -- dremel out the junk and used electrical tape for a good hold. The replacement bulb socket is in, but I just haven't had the heart to deconstruct my tape masterpiece.)

I have replaced the bulbs twice in the past 6 months and the first time was a pain but the second time it was easy. I didnt notice anything looking nasty but Ill check again when I go and pick up some more bulbs.

If my D/S brake light is any indication I would bet that the bulbs weren't even burnt out. I have had a persistant problem with mine since I bought it 5 years ago, and many times it was an intermittent connection that resolved its self when I played with it.

The byproduct of the intermittent connection, as BaldEagle pointed out, is a lot of heat, which has melted the plastic behind the connection points. I think the suggestion of buying a new one from AB is a good one.
