I need a better way to carry my DSLR on off-road trips. I've been packing the camera gear in a Pelican 1510 but it's not quickly accessible there. I tried wrapping it in a clean towel and storing it in the Tuffy console box but it gets banged up. I have a LowePro Flipside 300 but it's too small to store the camera with all of my lenses and still keep a lens attached.

I'm looking for something that would protect the camera and be small enough to fit inside the Tuffy box or behind the seat, but also be big enough to hold a Canon 5D Mk II with 24-70 lens attached. Need some ideas.

At your mom's
A Tamrac 5766 sling case is my go-to "I want to bring the SLR into the field" bag.
http://www.tamrac.com/frame_velocity.htm

The shoulder strap looks snaggy, but I've had no issues.

Holds things nice and snug.
Will hold your mounted mid-zoom; a flash, a loose prime or short zoom, charger, dedicated spare card and battery holders, towel, and assorted bits.

As a pro photographer, I love my Pelican 1510. And it's pretty accessible and smaller than you might think. That being said, something to go in the Tuffy? Hmm. I've been sponsored by Lowepro, but even if I'd not been, I'd highly recommend one of their Slingshots or Toploaders. I use several of each and love them. I've found over the years that one must use many different bags/cases based on the situation.... perhaps a Toploader in conjunction with the Pelican? Just my $.02

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Ive gone through a lot of different bags and cases including my pelican which I don't use anymore. My favorite and now the only thing I use is a sling. It's small but holds a the gear I use, my DSLR with lens, extra lens, memory cards, batteries, cloth, and some other random small things. I don't have a flash but I'm sure I could fit one in there. I sling it over the passenger seat so I can just reach over and grab it whenever i need it. Works great. Don't know if a sling will fit in the tuffy console but I just throw the whole bag in the 1600 pelican in the back of the truck when i want to leave it. The bag on my sling pack is kind of narrow and sometimes feels awkward when wearing it. That Tamrac looks pretty nice like it would feel more like a backpack. Might check that one out.

I like Pelicans. They pop right open. To me, it doesn't get more accessible than that. The Nikon bag I've got worked great, but it was annoying as hell.

Cheers,

Lowepro Slingshot 200 AW took my D90 and several lenses across Africa multiple times. Held up great, even through abuse. Invaluable was the rain cover that tucks away in the bottom.

I've been looking at the Lowepro Slingshots online, but it's hard to figure out if it will fit my camera. I've got a Nikon D200 with the battery grip on the bottom and a 18-200 lens. Will the Slingshot 302 fit my camera?

A hundred and seventy bucks... For a little camera bag? It better be lined in Alcantara.

craigslist/ebay is your friend. I bought the F-3x (or one the same size) 5-6 years ago for 35 off ebay.

My Canon DSLR and lenses fit in a Storm Case iM2100...does the trick , is compact and I like the Storm Cases better than Pelican. The case was probably $50 or so...

I like all of my Lowepro bags but the one bag that continually rocks is my Nova 2. Here is a pic of my old D70s with a 18-200VR attached. To the left is a SB-800 (specs provided so you can relate in size). I now run with a D300 body, same everything else. Its a little more snug but it hasn't bothered me in 3 years.

There is plenty of room in there, heck underneath I carry a cheapo 50mm f/1.8.

Its cheap, easy to grab, comfortable to carry and I can quickly access everything I want. I mainly use this setup for off roading. It has made me many a dollar to afford my rover upgrades and repairs.
