Dumb question about spare tire

I decided to wash my spare tire, so I took it off. I have a 97 D1, when I took off the spare wheel cover, it was a steel rim. Did they come this way or am I missing something? I've seen the newer models with the same wheels all around including spare. Were 97's this way? Makes no difference I guess, just wanted to know. Thanks.

Yup....

Spyder,

That steel wheel was the stock wheel for the Discovery in the UK when it first came out, alloys were an upgrade item. When Rover started bringing the Discovery to the US, to upscale it a bit they used alloy wheels, but left the steel wheel on the door, since it was under the "pie plate".

When they changed to the Disco II, Rover started using an alloy wheel for the spare, too.

Some folks hunt down another alloy and replace the steel wheel. A lot of folks will take the steel wheel off of your hands, so that they can use them for their off-road tires.

The steel wheel is a good wheel, made by Dunlop. It's Rover's heaviest rim.

FWIW.....

I see. Pie plate, that's funny. I'm glad it has a pie plate on it or else it would look horrible. Thanks for the replies.

I know what you mean Spyder... The first time I got a flat, I couldn't believe that I had a steelie under the full tire cover, but I think the best is trying to put that lousey tire cover back on. When I upgrade tires, I'll actually be looking to see if anyone wants to trade my tire cover for a "pie plate".
