Ebay MAFs verses Bosche/LR MAFs

I need to order yet another MAF for a 2001RR today. Part# MKH100800 which I recall is the same one used on 2003/4 Bosche Discoveries.

You can buy a bushel of MAFs off of Ebay for the same price as one "genuine" MAF. I did find a Bosche MAF on Ebay for $169, but that is still two or three time higher than the other brandless sensors.

If anyone has extensive experience with the reliability of genuine MAFs verses Ebay MAFs please post it.

I have never personally done this, but saved this post just in case... seems like it's a good less expensive option.

All of the Bosch 0280218### and 0280217### use the same sensor element F00C2G2029 or equivelent. The only difference I have seen is the molded body that holds the sensor is different to fit your application. With this in mind. When I replaced mine all I needed was the sensor so I purchased the cheapest BOSCH (not an off brand) housing I could find that had the correct sensor element. The one I used was the VW #06A906461A. Found it new on ebay for $70 with free shipping. The sensor was exactly the same and has worked flawlessly. The OBDII live data readings are within spec and no codes have thrown. I used a set of pliers to remove the tamper proof Torx screws holding the sensor and swaped them. Be sure to note the orentation is important for the airflow.

My first priority is to get the truck operational again. But I am going to try the VW sensor and keep one inside the car as a spare.

Does anyone know where to get the "allen" wrench to fit these sensors??. It has five "torx" type points with a stud in the center.

Does anyone know if the 2001 Bosche RR has an O-ring on the MAF?? Right now I am thinking the earlier RRs had an O-ring, and the 1999 and up RRs did not. Air leaks or O-ring issues might be the cause or contribute to This sensor failing.

I've never had experience with the ebay brands, but I went through 3 aftermarket alternative cheaper maf's (came in a Lucas box) supplied by 2 different reputable LR parts dealer (they said they never had a problem with them). The truck ran fine but I kept getting MAF codes, it was weird. I finally got a Bosch genuine sensor and never had another code again. It was very frustrating trying to figure what was going on, the cheaper maf's are tempting but I'd stick with what you know works.

Bought one off ebay for my P38. Worked great for a year until I started getting a slew of codes again. After battling it for 6 months bought a new one from British Pacific and so far so good. I'll let you know if it lasts longer than the 'cheapie' from Ebay.

Still have one coming from Ebay but was able to pick up a Bosche sensor today from Rover Automotive for much less than I could find it anywhere else. The only difference was the housing which had a smaller bore:

RR part# is MKH100800 and has a 77mm bore
D2?? part# is ERR7171 and has a 70mm bore

I was able to switch the sensor into my RR housing by using the Dremel small fibre cut-off wheel to cut a screwdriver slot right across the center of the mounting screws. With the slot cut across the screw-head I can use the flat blade screwdriver to remove the sensors from their housings.

Have also found all the MAFS have O-rings to seal against the intake.

Bosche part# for the actual sensor is F 00C 2G2 029. This sensor is used on BMWs VWs and Rovers.

Just go straight to Sears for the security bits. They have an entire set that will have everything you ever need in it, and it's pretty cheap as well. The things are great to have around.

Cheers,

Swapped mine a couple of years ago and all I used was the needle nose in the leather-man, gripped the outside edges of the screws. Worked perfectly no need to buy another tool I won't use that much if ever.

Tried the swap over the weekend - here's what happened.

'01 D2 w/ 4.6L running 4.0L ECU. Intermittent 1174/1171 codes.
Acquired Bosch MAF from a VW. Pulled sensor and matched part numbers to OEM D2 sensor. The locking tabs were not compatible, but no big deal. Fixed w/ zip tie.

Now, here's the weird part. Started right up. No codes. When I hit the throttle, engine bogged down. When revved quickly, puffs of black smoke out the tail pipe. This continued every time I press the throttle. Engine running WAY rich. O2 sensor did not adjust and I don't know why. Let it run for a minute+ without any change.

Swapped back to my original sensor and smooth running once more.

Hmmmm.
