I have a neighbor whom is experiencing an ECU problem in a 98 Range Rover, 4.0.... They have a replacement ECU and intend to swap. What is involved in swapping the ECU? Symptons are high idle, 2000rpm, check engine lights constant on. The fuse box had overheated and and has been replaced. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated...

My first question would be what error codes you are getting that make you think the ECU is bad.

My second question would be which ECU are you changing? There are many just on the serial bus
  • BeCM
  • SRS
  • ABS
  • HEVAC
  • ECM
  • Cruise Control
  • EAS
  • Transfer Box
  • EAT
  • Instrument Pack

Third question, where did the overheat occur in the fuse box (which fuse?) Is this the integral BeCM fuse box you are talking about?

at this point we do not have a code reader or the software. Since I personally have a 95 D1 with a reader under the seat, I don't have the hardware or software to obtain the codes. Any suggestions as to where I can obtain these tools??
