Detroit Locker will often break - the shock load may be too much for fine "teeth" on the side plates.
Cheap-ass "lunchbox" version of Detroit (using stock carrier) won't break - it has a lot coarser "teeth" on side plates, but it is ugly on the street.
TrueTrac is not likely to break. But I don't know many people who broke axleshafts with TrueTracs, so I can't say anything.

will a tt handle 35"s?

If the question is whether it'll break or not - most likely, not.
Whether it's the best traction diff for this size tire - I don't know.
The maximum torque you can send to a wheel with brake application is max brake torque times ~2.5-3 (if another wheel is in the air or on ice etc.).
Max .brake torque (either left foot in a D1, or TC in a D2) does not change with increase of tire size, but traction torque and engine torque (if you use lower gears) increase.
Bottom line, the efficiency of TT will gradually decrease with the increase in tire size.

****not rover parts. ****
I have broken 3 front axles in a D44 with Detroit locker and have not broken the locker yet.
Mine has broken the u-joint ears off the inner axle shaft every time on the short side.

Dan, front U-joints (even 297X) on a D44 are weaker than axleshafts in rear D44s. My guess would be that they break a lot sooner than the locker would.

I've busted D44 axel ears with an open diff and 33" A/Ts. if that gives any sense of how weak those ear tabs are...

You spit the cups out first I bet...go to 360* snap rings and that issue goes away and the outer stub shaft becomes the weak link.

any viscous type lsd's for a rover like in jeep's quadra-drive. just curious.
You could use some research on differential types.
From 74 to 79, Jeep had a full-time 4WD setup with a "Quadratrac" transfer case. It had simple friction-type limited slip mechanism around the center diff, which could be locked. It barely worked new, because the clutch cones and preload were small.

There have been several iterations of 4WD setup bearing the Quadratrac name, the last being Quadra-drive. Quadra-drive is a good setup, BUT it does depend on the amount of wheelspin - it uses clutch plates progressively locking up the differentials (all three), with the clamping force increasing with difference in output shafts' rates of rotation. It is not a "viscous type" setup like Range Rovers'.
There is no such solution for Land Rovers.
