What is the max psi and gpm for the land Rover power steering pump.

Please let me know.


At the suggestion of some board members :rolleyes: I looked into the MM 10,500 hydraulic winch but I am torn between using the ps pump or getting an electric hydraulic pump to power it.

If electric I can use it with the engine off or flooded. And since I have no experience with hydraulics I am curious as to how much amp draw a 3.5 gpm motor/pump pumping to 1500psi would have or the cost, and how large a resevoir I would need

Or should I just say fuck it and hook it up to the ps pump.

I have also thought of this but come to the conclusion....
Practical but exspensive...
However if you come across a 12V hyd. pump and get it working, I think youll have the best system.

if you are going with the electric pump, why not just go with an electric winch? the electric pump will only run for several minutes before you have to let it cool down similar to the electric winch. i see no advantage going with the electric pump unless you are using it as a back up for the p/s driven pump (for when the engine stops). this can be done, but adds another $350.00 to the system.

Depends on if it's a D1 or a D2. on a D2, it will work, but it will be really slow. I'm running my MM off a ACE pump, plenty of psi and gpm, I increased the capacity by installing a transmision cooler. I looked into a 12 volt pump, but duty cycle killed tha idea, you only get a couple of minutes before you have to let the pump motor cool...

It is a 03 D2.

I don't think the gpm is even that high, it's somewhere around 1.7 or 1.8 on the D2. It will do about 1400 psi, that's at 2500rpm. I did some test on my D2 and I need to find the results...I'll post it up when I get home...

Mongo, you're probably right on the flow. On a D1, the ps pump is rated at 1100 psi. What it actually can do is another matter.

Regardless, whether it is 1.7 or 3.5, the MM will still be slow. :D

I ended talking to land rover and Mike you are bang on. 1100 ish and 2.5ish

Mike is the winch usable at the lower rate or should I just get another L'il Smoker.
And will the Steering box take the extra pressure and flow if I up grade the pump( are they seperate or matched units)

The winch is definately usable at a lower rate but make sure you have a snatch block with you because it will only pull at around 6000lbs. I had that setup for a while and it never failed me. I was stuck pretty bad a couple of times and the winch never stalled, that is with the block. Check out the link my brother posted. Stay away from the lil smokers!

Ross, like my brother said, the stock pump is decent as long as you use the snatch block. As to whether you go with a smoker, I think it depends on what type of wheeling you do. If you are pulling yourself out of mud with potentially long pulls, the MM is definitely better than the smoker. If you just need to move your Disco over an obstacle for a very short distance the smoker might be fine.

If you decide to replace the stock pump with a higher psi pump, you'll definitely need to add a relief valve to lower the pressure to the steering box.
