end of cv shaft doesn't come out far enough

I posted this on the range rover forum also. Thanks for any help. I just replaced the swivel ball and cv joint on my left front axle. Now that everything is going back together the end does not stick out. I cant put the retaining clip on the end. The right hand side the splines stick about 3/8 of an inch. The right hand side has some play. I screwed a bolt into the end of the shaft and tried pulling on it. No movement. Any hints on what I might have missed in reassembly that would help.

did you change the oil seals?? inner oil seal seated to far will cause exaclty what your're talking about.

You need to loosen the stub axle and pull the shaft so it don't bind up.Then tighten stub axle.

Use your bolt in the end and attach a slide hammer, or something to act like a slide hammer. It won't take much....
