Engine doesn’t start when engine gets to operating temps

Over the las few months been having problems starting my 95 D1. It’s intermittent in the city when it’s cold but lately it’s been happening a lot when I go off roading. After normal slow driving in trails, if I shut off the engine, it won’t start. It cranks but it start like it’s flooded. If it does try to start it struggles to stay on like it’s being starved of air or fuel and pressing the gas pedal does nothing to get it to rev. It will gurgle and die! I’ve had this ongoing problem off and on for years but now it’s really bad again. Any advice or help of where to start would be appreciated. My D1 does not have a crank sensor. Thanks!

Does hitting the ignition module with compressed air to cool it do anything?

Do you smell gas when it won't start? I had a similar problem on my '95 caused by a leaky fuel injector o-ring. It struggled to start when hot. I could faintly smell gas when it wouldn't start which made me think "flooded". This went on for a while until I got stranded. I pulled all the injectors and found a nicked o-ring that was leaking. Fixed that and it never happened again.

Yes I do smell lots of gas as of 2 weeks ago on my Baja trip. I thought it was my jerry can inside the car.. The smell is definitely in the rear cargo area bc the i can smell it on the carpet. But here we are 2 weeks later and it still smells like gas. I'll have to look into that.

IACV maybe? Pretty easy to pull it and clean the pintle and the recess it enters.

I would go ahead and do the ign. module relocation kit, and replace the coil while your doing that.
Edit: Opps The relocation kit was installed on D110 not the DI. A new coil was installed. I have a Mallory dizzy and the rotor, cap and unlite ignition module was all replaced. New IACV replaced last Oct.

The relocation kit was installed last spring as well as a new ignition module. Coil was also replaced. I have a Mallory dizzy and the rotor, cap and unlite ignition module was all replaced. New IACV replaced last Oct.
Then I would suspect the coil. Also the ecu pulses the ground for the distributor. But being heat related I would suspect the coil.

A friend told me today he thinks it’s a leaking injector due to heat affecting the starting and the smell of gas. Anyone else concur with this?

One of my club friends said the same thing that it sounds like a leaky injector. Need to get that checked out.

Following.

Any updates on ur fix? I have a GEMS 4L that is having the same issue. Winter it will hesitate some but first real warm day recently and its acting up almost every start. Some have suggested coolant temp sensor is bad and possibly dirty MAF.

Eddie, it is easy to check.
Your D1 has a Schrader valve on the fuel rail - put a gauge on it, and watch the pressure. If it goes up to ~30 psi when the pump is running and drops to zero quickly when ignition is off, chances are one or more of injectors are leaking.
Probably, the most frequent cause for running rich (and poor starting while hot) is bad coolant temperature sensor or its wiring. There's also fuel temp sensor, but I can't figure out if it really affects anything.

FWIW, MAF readings are ignored when engine is started.

Is this frequent? I throw it in the same category as "check the grounds"

Plug an obd2 reader in there, does the temp match what is expected? If so, move on.
