Engine gets hot in traffic

I did some engine work about a month ago that required the draining of coolant.
Now my truck gets HOT when in traffic for extended periods of time. Mainly in somewhat stop/go traffic under 30mph. It hasn't overheated although it might if I let it. When I notice the temp gauge start climbing I kick the heater on and it brings it back down pretty quickly.

On Saturday I drove on the highway for about 6 hours almost straight. Not one problem. Get off the highway and sit in city traffic with stop lights for 20 minutes and BAM the temp gauge climbs.

I tried putting the front right tire on a ramp, opening the reservoir and running the truck with the heater on for a while but that didn't seem to help.

Could this just be air in the system or something more serious.

I use the LR factory manual method of refilling the radiator. It states to remove both the radiator plug and the coolant tank cap. Then fill the radiator through the coolant tank until the radiator is full as observed through the radiator plug. Start the motor and let it idle until normal operating temperature is achieved, i.e. thermostat opens, topping up as necessary. Then switch off motor and replace plug and cap. I've used this method countless times and never had a problem with air in the system.
