Engine Whine Noice -- Does Blown Head Gasket have a Sound

Have had multiple issues over the last few weeks

First the Front Drive Shaft caused a horrible vibration -- replaced

Last week the Coolant/Water Pump failed -- and yes the engine got a little hot
-- Replaced Water Pump (old was locked up) with URO Parts pump from Amazon who was the only place I could get a pump quick
-- Replaced Serpentine Belt (it was a tight fit getting on) with Dayco Poly Rib
-- Replaced Idler Pulley next to Tensioner with Dayco 90mm (Atlantic British shows 80mm as Standard)

Car runs fine for the first 5 minutes then I get an awful whine with acceleration -- sitting still and moving so not Transmission/Transfer Case/etc (in my opinion). I do have a video on my phone but I do not know how to upload yet.

-- Oil shows no signs of coolant
-- Coolant Overflow seems nice a green (no dis-color)
-- Performance is fine, but as soon as the whine hits it does seem to be less peppy
-- Not really any hotter running than before

Question -- If I the Head Gasket was damaged due to Coolant Pump failure, Does a HG Failure typically make a Whine when it fails.

I do not see the evidence of any Exhaust Leaks, held a strip of paper near all the joints and did not see any extra airflow -- Might try the SeaFoam trick this weekend.

I will pick up a cheap mechanics stethoscope from Harbor Freight to see if I can pinpoint the whine -- or at least get a area of noise.

Thanks for any suggestions.

When it's whining, if you stop the engine, remove the serp belt, and start it back up, does the whine disappear?

I'd be really suspect of that cheap ass Uro pump. I've used one in a pinch on another vehicle, and it only lasted about 5k miles before the bearing was completely shot. I would have been better off waiting a couple of days for something that wasn't a piece of shit.

The other suspect item is the incorrect idler pulley you're using. It may be stressing the tensioner too much or even causing the whine itself.

My guess is a bad pulley, just did the heads on mine and had to do all the pulleys. It was whining like crazy, Im glad I did as one bearing was frozen and just spinning on the bolt.

Check all your hoses and clamps too, I found a cracked intake tube when searching for the whine.

I plan on getting a engine stethoscope today and listen to all -- I have no problem replacing those parts which is a much better option than a blown head gasket.

But what I do not want to do is purchase another Water Pump / Idler Pulley and they are not the problem -- and the problem is the Head Gasket.

If Head Gasket, I would probably just go get another vehicle -- this poor one has body damage, while I can find a D2 locally for under $3K easy.

Head gaskets do not whine, I'd put that idea aside.

Thank you -- that was my biggest fear and would probably just force me to go find another vehicle (for the kids to destroy).

As long as it is not the Head Gasket I will test the Water Pump and Idler Pulley for noise issue -- hopefully it is just one of the idler pulleys since they are easy to change out.

Just please, do not use stethoscope to test water pump and idler pulley for noise. It is far easier and a whole lot safer to remove the belt.

Well, pulled the serpentine belt and noise went away - after more checking it appears the idler pulley on the driver side is the issue.

I replaced the passenger side but not the driver side - and when I checked the driver side it feels gritty - so will order a replacement.

Should of replaced both - lesson learned.

Thanks to all.

Replaced the idler pulley (Driver Side)

Everything is back to normal -- no "Whine"

Lessons Learned
-- Check all the Pulleys to make sure you replace all the bad ones
-- Do not trust a Torque Wrench, I snapped one of the Water Pump bolts when torqueing down. Fortunately I could cut a slot in the broken bolt with my dremel and unscrew it -- Ace Hardware had a nice replacement. I used my other "Sears" Torque wrench which work perfectly.
-- Should of purchased a better Water Pump, not worth the savings if I have to do the job over again. Not saying to go to the dealer but Amazon also has the AirTex which I believe supplies Rover with parts -- not positive on that
