There's an automotive journalist at LA Times - Dan Neil - who's work keeps my spirits up. Here's a last paragraph from his last article on VW Golf R32 -

People frequently ask me which car they should buy, and I'm just as frequently disheartened by the low ambitions that shape their purchases ? resale value, cost, practicality. Cars are more than the sum of their statistics divided by cost. Buy a car that fits you, that makes you feel happy, that reminds you of an old romantic interest or a character in a favorite book or good times in college. Love is often found in unexpected places.

I think this should be made a slogan of DW - and referred to whenever a question like "Should I buy a Disco?" is asked.

And that new golf looks like it could be a fun little car too.

always has been - never knew they made an AWD version. but, VR6 was a screamer #1 (esp. when people chipped off the VR6 insignia)

have you read about the new GTI? Looks great

Here's a piece of the article from the link above.

The new GTI gets Volkswagen's first application of the all-new direct injection gasoline (FSI for Fuel Stratisfied Injection in VW speak) 16v 2.0l 4-cylinder turbo with 200hp and 207 ft-lbs. of torque available from a low 1,800 RPM. The new 2.0T utilizes continuous intake camshaft adjustment and a variable intake manifold, plus direct gasoline injection and a new turbocharged integrated into the exhaust manifold. Simply put, the new 2.0T blows the old 1.8T out of the water on all levels and that is saying a lot, given the 1.8T was on Ward's 10 Best Engine list for a number of years.

I had a golf....thing was a riot to drive...but then Myra came home from the Hospital and the Golf turned into a 4Runner :(
For most people in your position, their Golfs turn into minivans.

A couple I know just had their first baby last weekend. I was best man at their wedding, so I feel obliged to make sure they don't buy a Caravan or something.

LOL,

I liked the comment about choosing a vehicle in general more than the Golf. If I were in a market for one, it would be a TDi, rather than VR6 or its successor.

Neil's at it again, this time, about Bentley Continental GT Speed:

"Some may regard these marginal increases in performance metrics not worth the GT Speed's price premium ($199, 990, $24,000 over the GT), but these people have tiny yachts you can't even land a helicopter on. "
