I used to stay in a certain hotel in Costa Rica. It was nice until they replaced all the lights in the building with compact flourecents. I hate the light they give, it is like there is light but you cant see anything. All glare no illumination. Having been a professional photographer I am very aware of lighting.

I started staying at a different hotel.

I have a couple CFL's around the house - in the garage opener, on the back patio, and in an interior accent light next to the TV. The light those bulbs gives off reminds me of the lighting in a bad dream where you're in some kind of hazy twilight.

My buddy has a rather liberal wife and one day she replaced EVERY bulb in the house with CFL. He came home from work and was not happy to say the least.

Alright guys, with every prohibition comes opportunity. Let's buy several containers full of Chinese light bulbs. We'll ship them to Russia and then smuggle them into the EU. We'll make a fortune.

Its like being in the bar at 2:00am, they don't call em "ugly lights" for nothing. ;)

The fact that government has to mandate this indicates:

1) People don't want 'em
2) They're too expensive
and thus,
3) They have no economic value

If the above were not true, there would be no need for government regulation because people would recognize the economic value of such things and purchase them on their own.

Gotta love government. I hope you do, because EU regulatory regimes is the direction we're headed.
