Exhaust system

I installed a Britpart cat back about three years ago and the center muffler seems to be rusting from the inside out and appears to be about to burst open soon. Someone attempted to relieve me of one of my cats a while back, but gave up after cutting completely through the rear pipe. I had it welded back together, but the cat seems to have failed internally and some of the bits are probably lodged in the center muffler probably causing the muffler to deteriorate. Anyway, I need a replacement and found this great looking, albeit expensive, stainless steel setup at AB. Does anyone have experience with the Double S muffler brand?

Old Indy will be in the family for many years to come, so I'd like to find a setup that's stock sounding (quiet) and long lasting.

I have never used a Double S muffler, but I can say with shipping that cat back will cost almost what I have paid for a whole exhaust. If your cats are failing, consider having a good muffler shop quote two new cats and a cat back in stainless pipe. You also only need one muffler on a Land Rover, as the rear resonator contributes little. I recently had it removed on a RRC and it made almost no difference in sound.

Is thread drift allowed? It's Discoweb, never mind. I've lost the exhaust tip and then the resonator. Is there an alternate routing that solves this problem? And FWIW the Borla exhaust system without the resonator (or exhaust tip) is louder, but not much, than with it but I've gotten used to it.

If I could do it again I would have no resonator or eliminate the muffler and use only the resonator Previously, I had a Borla muffler and no resonator. It sounded just right. Now, it’s too quiet and I don’t like loud exhausts.

CO is a carb compliant state now. I got an estimate to replace just the cats from a reputable muffler shop and the quote was......$2300. Gulp!

Luckily I've spent more than the state $ maximum for repairs so far, so I'm getting an emissions exemption. I'm just going to replace the cat back and call it a day.

I found this SS cat back system from Rimmer Bros in the UK. The cost is approximately half what AB is asking. Waiting for a shipping estimate.

On a related note, I purchased a stainless system for my 300tdi from Rimmers. I don’t know who makes their stainless exhaust parts. I have no complaints but it was expensive. Well, it was expensive compared to a mild steel one you buy on this side of the Atlantic.

I have the NRP stainless exhaust on my D1 V8. I have a video comparing the stock vs NRP vs open (nothing cat-back).

That TF559 is too loud for me. I'm a stock exhaust kinda guy.

The total from Rimmer Bros including SS cat back, fitting kit, and shipping is $850. That's $150 less than AB's total not including the fitting kit. The shipping is almost as much as the parts! I was hoping it'd be little lower, but I'm actually not surprised.

I asked who manufactures their cat back and received this...We have multiple suppliers for these exhaust components depending on price & availability. They are of a comparable quality & carry the same 12 month or 12,000 miles warranty.

Now I gotta decide if I want to drop the coin on the SS cat back, or just replace the mid muffler with another mild steel version. The rear silencer is in great shape and doesn't require replacement. I can get a replacement Ansa mid muffler from RockAuto shipped for $160.

How long did the current mild steel mid muffler last? While I have a NRP SS system on my Rangie stuck with mild steel from Rovers North on the D1. Just more cost effective.

It only lasted around 3 years, but I think that's because my cat broke apart and emptied the catalyst bits into the muffler.

319 shipped for another who knows who assy.. Maybe britpart IDK but a CHEAP option for you guys..

I myself went to local exhaust shop and repiped from Y to tip with a flowmaster in it for 300 cash. Holding this KIT info in hand got them down from 400, "like I can get a kit like this for 300, what can you do on the price?"

I have the full Britpart system shown above on one of mine. If you are curious about the sound…

Also, I have just the center silencer made by Britpart paired with an Ansa resonator at the rear on another one. The rear Ansa section must do a lot more as it is much quieter than the full Britpart system. I plan to try the center silencer delete pipe with the Ansa rear section at some point to see the difference.

I usually do my own mufflers and welding, but I have an NRP and a Borla cat back on a couple of our rovers. Both sound good. I don’t care for the borla tip. They’re both old and still in great shape but I like the NRP the most. I typically use magnaflow cats. They fit well. I think they also sell a y pipe complete. I put a magnaflow muffler in my series V8 project and it’s crackles like a mustang (no resonator) and is too loud for me. Won’t do that again.
