Hi All,

My '01 Discovery II just went over 50,000 miles. What kind of problems could I expect in the near future?

Thanks,

Gerry

Depends on how you have treated and maintained it. LR's like maintenance. They are VERY unforgiving if not maintained properly. You sound a bit paranoid about having "problems"...

The usual things to go first would be cruise control (vacuum lines), ABS sensors, O2 sensors, and a handful of other things depending on how you use your rig. Off road a lot? There is a whole different list to run down if you do. If you are not a DIY kind of guy, then get to know a reliable LR mechanic. Specifically someone that has worked on them before. My suggestion is to not go to the dealer after your warranty unless you have very deep pockets.

But really nothing at this point (50k miles) to worry about. Just usual maintenance. I have 92k on my 96 D1 and have just maintained it regularly, replaced worn out or faulty parts and have had no mechanical problems whatsoever. My CC doesn't work but I don't really care and live with it. Just a few electrical problems but that is battery related.

You may read about a lot of problems on DWeb but that is what it is here for! Most all LR owners know of DWeb and use it to fix their own rigs or at least get a diagnostic so they know what to tell the mechanic. They really are not THAT bad...

I'm at 56k and the only thing to go since 50k is the steering box. I had it replaced at the dealer under an aftermarket warranty.

My only major issue with the turck was with the aforementioned ABS sensors - I think one was replaced at least twice, a new "slabs" ECU, but new rotors & pads finally solved the problem. This took at least 5 trips to the dealer. Granted, this didn't impact driveability, but it was a huge hassle.

According to what I've heard, maintenance is key, and I'm looking forward to improving my skills under the hood. I plan on doing most all of the scheduled maintenance myself.

No - the title of his message is "Buy a workshop manual". I think that is what he is referring to to buy on eBay. You can also get a CD ROM of the manuals in PDF format for about $20-40 depending. Again on eBay you can find these too. Those are what I use and just print pages that I need.

buy a workshop manual

sorry for the confusion - yes, on ebay people sell the workshop manuals. You can get them other places as well - just make sure it is specific to DIIs and is in a PDF format. I have seen some for sale that supposedly cover defenders, DIs and DIIs - too much info for me and unfortunately do not own three rovers ..... or maybe i should say "fortunately".

good luck -

Bought mine w/ 50k on it in Jan of this year. Only major hassles have been the radiatior ($180.00 @ AB) that started leaking about the time I signed the title  & the front driveshaft went south. Be very careful if you feel any vibration that could be comming from the driveline, if the shaft lets go it causes all kinds of havoc. Mine started as a very slight vibration under acceleration, drove ~100 miles before I checked the D/S & the u-joints were going to fail in the next few miles. Not a maint issue because LR installs "lifetime u-joints" (54K lifetime I guess).
