Hello all,

Land Rover has offered to extend my warranty on my 2001 D2 (49k miles) for $1,200 for 3 years or 50k more miles. (bumper to bumper)

Do any of you more experienced Disco owners think this is a good purchase??

Thanks :D

sounds about right... I think I was quoted more, but there's so many variations on the time/miles

What I've learned in my short experience with warranty and offroading.. if you break something, even if your car looks modded.. wash it before you bring it to the dealership.. clean the engine well.. if it doesn't look like you wheeled it, they'll replace it.. point in fact: in the past 2 months, I've had 2 mass air flow sensors replaced.. first time, it was b/c i had a check engine light.. I washed/waxed the day before.. they replaced for free.. the next time, I had my truck towed there after wheeling, mud was covering the roof of it, the floors were muddy, obvious what I did.. and they charged me..

Not sure about the Land Rover warrenty but, I had an extended aftermarket warrenty for about 3 days.. When I got the book in the mail it said in the fine print that any mod done to the truck ( like lockers, lift, and gears ) would void it.. So I got my money back.. Talk to your dealer where you will have the repairs done and see what they say about it.. Most the time they are the ones that are going to decide if it's warrenty work or not. SOme are cool about it some are not.. I don't know about ford though since I have only been to the dealer for parts since my warrenty expired 2 years and 20 some odd thousand miles ago.

If they are rational, they'll not attribute any failure with any mod. I've found that they are not rational at at least one dealer I've been to. I had a problem with the transmission ECU and the first thing they said was that my lift caused it. Turns out it was a bad cell in my battery causing low voltage problems... lift eh?

Daniel, from my experience check the fine print as mentioned earlier, and if the exclusions aren't unreasonable and the coverage is close to the original warranty...BUY IT!! Especially if you plan on driving it another 20-50k miles. I turned down an extended warranty on mine when I bought it from the dealer, biggest mistake I made. I bought it with 71k miles two years ago and it now has 115k miles on it. The amount of money I've paid in repairs, I probably could have bought two of them. Something else to watch out for is stop loss clauses, especially those related to the value of the vehicle. Not sure if that exists on the extended manufacturer's warranty. Bottom line, read everything and make sure the warranty makes sense...if so, the extended warranty is money well spent in my experience.

I bought the extended warranty for $1700 when I purchased my pre-owned 1999 D2 almost 2 years ago. I used it for the first time 2 weeks ago. It broke even with the $1700 and saved me an additional $800. Since the warranty work was going to be over $1000 they required having a factory rep. come out and take a look. He approved everything except the O2 sensor wire that had rubbed through on the front drive shaft. He said this was due to the changed angulation of the drive shaft due to the lift. They simply said that if I hadn't modified the part, or if my mods would not affect the parts that are broken, I am covered. They were actually excited to see a truck that modified. I recommend that you get the warranty. Here is what my truck looks like as of when I dropped it off for the warranty work:

Jamil, your truck looks great. I may ask you more about that lift later.

Thanks everyone for all the great advice

I think he has got a RTE 3 inch lift with 33 inch tires...

And extended warrenty, new Transmission, $4000, only paid $50.
