It may be normal if you are loading it hard. But, I would check to make sure the cable attachments are in good condition, especially the ground.

I got a husky 8 and I think I figured it out. Husky 8 Manual

If you look at the manual and look at the connection diagram there is a small diameter black cable (10g) that goes from the neg term on motor housing to the red connection on the solenoid. If I get rid of that it works fine!!! WTF?!?!?!? Do you know what that cable would be for?

I know whats wrong with it. you did not get a WARN from me :)

All ball busting a side. it looks like its part of your controls. im around give me a call and we will figure it out 716 898 8153

Actually with that wire out of the loop totally, everything works fine so I am going to leave it that way. The controller works, motor runs good, and no hot wires!!! So...

I may be a ground for your controller but im not sure. If you dont hook it up you may get a ground loop. what page is it on in the instructions ?

Page 5, sorry so late. Just got done putting everything back together... PITA!!!

I have it on free spool to make sure it is working and it is but very hot???
If it's getting hot on free spool you have serious issues, since free spooling means you have the clutch disengaged and are pulling the cable out by hand.

But I expect you mean you are running it with no load and it's getting hot. Based on page 9 of the manual, which wires exactly are getting hot?

It is the small diameter black cable that goes from the neg lead on the motor housing to the red cables connection on the solenoid... Basically follow the neg lead from the bat. to the solenoid, it is the second in that series...

And yes, running the motor with no load. But after getting it all hooked up and mounted, with out that wire, it works fine. No hot cables and no hot motor...

This should have solved youre problem. Just remember that black on 12 volt is ground. Red is hot. Hook one to the other and you have a hot problem.

If you look at the wiring diagram, page 5 on the manual, it connects to the red on the solenoid. I believe it is the common off the solenoids. The yellow goes to one solenoid, the blue to the other so it is not the POS.

I'd say that either the the ground from the motor isn't good and you're getting some winch grounding via the small black wire, or the small black wire wasn't connected correctly to the solenoids.

Here is a diagram of the wiring. As I have stated a bunch of times, with that wire, the lime green in my crappy diagram, not there everything works beautifully. With that wire, power cables, 2GA welding cable, get hot including the motor. Without it, everything works beautifully. Also with that wire hooked up, the motor is slow and the solenoids make a clicking every once in a while.

I got 4 cables going to the winch motor. This is without the cable causing problems. I assume one is the ground, coming straight from the battery. The yellow (F1) and blue (F2) provide the positive from the solenoids to drive it forward and reverse since they are hooked up to only one solenoid. The red cable I have no idea, any ideas what that cable does? It is common between the two solenoids. And then finally the positive going to a common to both solenoids.

If the red in your drawing is the same as the red in the manual, it's the cable for the motor armature.
To get forward and reverse the solenoids essentially jumper Field 1 with the armature for one direction, and Field 2 with the armature for the other direction.

I understand that it works without the small black wire, but I can only assume they have it for a reason and that it should work porperly with it.
